pearl looks weirdly smoky and stained in places due to his unfortunate habit of accidentally dripping that weird shadow goop everywhere. normally this would be a problem ("don't you take care of your pearl?") but the few pearlcatchers in cetus-spine are surprisingly okay with it. probably because being in plague territory usually gets you at least a slight problem with your own pearl in some way at some point.

eye-shadows aren't actually from a disease or anything, he was just hatched like that.

just a small town pearl, living in a ridiculously dark world, he took the midnight train going anywhere yeah as expected he was hatched in the wispwillow grove, he thought he'd head to somewhere else (do dragons have trains?) and ended up in the city
