Sometimes your family is just a group of adventurers that you fall in with when you break out on your own in the world. It had always been a life that had draws for Dragonfly, he wanted to be an adventurer, one of the ones in the tales that were told to hatchlings. When he was a nocturne he would spend hours saying lines out of his favorite scrolls, posing for his favorite plays.

So when he caught the eye of Varris, who had grinned with those sharp teeth that ridgeback have and said, "Bard, you're coming with me."

Well, that was it really. Dragonfly had gone with him. He'd become close friends with the whole group. Along with Varris there was a snapper named Sir Rutherford, who thought himself a bold and valiant knight. There was Mouse, a mirror who was small and skittish, but ready with a well placed bite or dagger in a tough situation. Finally their group was rounded out by a spiral named Sauce, who was good with herbs and spells.

Altogether they made a pretty well-rounded group. Varris himself was an incredible spellcaster, he took to it in a way that seemed to put him at odds with Sauce a lot of the time, but their rivalry was friendly at worst. Dragonfly himself had a friendship with Mouse that was that of siblings. Which was to say that, while Dragonfly was protective of her, there would be moments where Mouse would show up out of nowhere to throw a random object at his head or just point and screech at him.

Thinking of that now makes him chuckle, that group was a strange one true, but they were good.

It had been Sir Rutherford who found Midori, wounded with coin gripped in zir claws and strange glowing eyes. What had really caught their attention, however, was the cold and dead way ze spoke. As if all of the life in the world had been driven out of zir.

Maybe most dragons would have left, but Dragonfly was sure that they could get through to zir. It was him that pushed the group to accept their new family member, and when they finally did (albeit grudgingly) it was slow going at its best.

But Dragonfly was an optimistic, if somewhat persistent, guy when he wanted to be. He wanted to make zir happy, and to his joy the others seemed to want this to. One step at a time, the whole group got Midori to open up. What was better yet, Midori brought a light with zir opening up that rivaled the sun itself. To hear zir laugh, one would never think ze could be the same dragon with that lifeless voice.

"We did a good thing picking zir up that day," Varris had told him over some drinks one night. The rest of the group had been passed out asleep, and Varris had stared into the fire with a wry smile on his face. "Shoulda trusted your judgment."

Dragonfly believes, to this day, that choosing to find Midori was the best thing he could have done for himself and his friends. They were closer than ever, they were helping dragons and beastclan alike in ways that he had never dreamed they would do.

Midori would not agree with him.

When a dragon from zir past came to take zir away, treated zir like his pet project, the group had been unwilling to part. Even after Sir Rutherford lay dead. Even after Mouse was crushed lifeless, even when it was just Dragonfly, Midori and Varris standing against the ten dragons Jenora had with him, they would not let this terrible dragon take her away.

"Go," Varris had told him, turning with blood-stained fangs and hurtling himself at the bogsneak.

Dragonfly was not an idiot. Sometimes that surprised dragons, but he had never been dumb. He had bundled Midori up and fled with zir. Had she not been so shell shocked, he was certain zee would have fought him. It broke his heart to leave Varris there. To see the light and love in that ridgeback's eyes before he turned to their enemy.

They were Varris' dragons. His people. He loved them and he would not let them all die there. Dragonfly had a hard time explaining why he was willing to run to Midori. He had a hard time reconciling it to himself, if he was honest, because it was just something about the way Varris had said that single word.

Midori had not held it against him, to Dragonfly's surprise. Just like that, the two friends were left alone in the world. Things were too quiet and lonely without them there to fill the quiet. That was why he'd been drawn to the Hollowclaws in the first place.

It was a sizeable guild, certainly bigger than what Jenaro had with him that dreadful day. They had told the leader everything, and they had been welcomed into the group with open claws. Two dragons that were well-versed with mire fighting weren't anything to sniff at after all.

He just hoped that this place would truly help Midori to heal, and maybe help him to heal too.
