Nikandros was someone that didn’t exist. Was someone that had been created, not born. A persona more than a flesh and blood person, a history with a title but no grain of truth within it. His name, his appearance, even his way of thinking, none of it had come naturally to him, had been crafted and delicately put together.

The cause for his creation, for the crafting of this story called Nikandros, had been a reunion of sorts. Family lost and found again. No one quite knew much about the lost princess, nor why she had left her home and with whom. Even her father barely spoke about her, either wounded by her absence or because he didn’t realize she had left for good. Either way, long overdue had been the meeting between grandfather and grandson and when it happened, the whole Empire held its breath.

The little princeling charmed the Undying Emperor only moments after meeting, easily had the ruler of the Empire wrapped around his little claw and his ear bend to every wish and whim. Other children could and would have easily abused it, overindulged in the allowance granted. Little Elliott however, proved to be of a different kind, meeker in desires but not in charm, bringing sunshine into eternal night.

Over night, Titaneaus had stomped out a home for his favorite grandson, constructed with magic and pure will alone, the most beautiful one in all of Veiled Garden. The child grew up pampered, the unrivaled favorite and darling of the Undying Family, even those that despised him, hid it well, because showing it openly meant to challenge the Emperor himself. But where there is light, there will be shadows as well. And in those, jealousy and greed grew like rot.

Titaneaus knew and so he crafted the story called Nikandros. He picked the best of Kisai’s people, took the core of a talented person and abilities only to embed it in a body perfected for protection and subtle kills. Given soft, unsuspecting colors and a sugary sweet smile, Nikandros sprung into existence, a blank sheet of a person to draft and mold himself to the little princeling’s liking, adapting, changing. Eternally gentle on the outside.

Behind cotton candy smiles and dream glazed eyes however, lurked a dangerous mind, sharp and calculating, putting the master over his own life. Nikandros waited on the young boy and watched him grow, steadily, unharmed by daggers in the shadows or poison in his tea, under the most loyal of servant’s care, he had been given the chance to bloom and grow.

As the princeling turned from adorable child into a handsome young man, Nikandros stayed unchanging at his side, sweet and loyal and very much ready to protect. In the shadows, he acted as a shield when the Emperor was not available, he plucked the strings in the background and created an oasis of calm for the boy. It had been him that ordered the daisies to be planted in the prince’s garden. It had been him that encouraged the gardener’s daughter to join the rank of knights. Because it meant that his charge would be saver.

That he could work ignored and overlooked in the dark while she stood proud and strong in the limelight of everyone’s attention. Nikandros’ sole reason for existence was to protect, to serve. If he was hollow because of that, he would gladly pay this price, because he loved what he did. He adored the prince he was serving under, he was grateful for this chance.

And no one ever suspected the servant.
