SAGITARI ; deceased

═════════════════════════════════════════════

Sagitari was from a fortunate upbringing in the Sunbeam Ruins, but her family moved into the Tangled Wood for economic business and lucrative careers. She grew up in a clan called the Midnight Seclusion, appreciating the luxurious lifestyle her family could afford, but still being compassionate. In her school, she met a blue and silver Ridgeback named Cygnus who was one of the popular students. They excelled in physical activities and some sports, and expressed admiration for the clan's soldiers. Although they had a cocky attitude, Sagitari was still drawn to them and they formed a close friendship. She liked Cygnus' enthusiasm and commitment to their goals, and Cygnus appreciated Sagitari's compassion and loyalty. Though Cygnus' brashness got them into trouble and often ended in Sagitari cooling them down, that didn't hinder them. After a time, they became inseparable.

As they got older, they both started training to become soldiers for their clan. Cygnus was strong, fast, and able to surprise their opponents, but Sagitari was much more strategic. Even if it took longer, she always took the "slow and steady wins the race" stance. The two were a great team, especially when Sagitari suggested her plans and had Cygnus carry out the more difficult tasks. Their skills clicked so well together in fact that they were promoted together, even achieving the capital guard status. Only the most elite soldiers were allowed to defend the most important buildings in the capital, such as the palace. They met the sovereign Shadarsia and the Night's Prudence and were honored for their deeds. All the while, they stuck by each other's sides, fighting and working through every hardship and obstacle in their way. Nothing could tear them apart.

"These savages raided our crops and attacked our livestock and neighbors! Please do something about it, find them, anything. This is our livelyhood that's being damaged."

The first significant sighting of strange chitin-covered dragons was brought to the authorities by a few farmers. They spoke of creatures that looked like dragons, but weren't. They didn't seem to have a mind, nor were they afraid. Guards chased them out soon after, but the farmers were concerned that the creatures would come back.

Sagitari noticed how outraged Cygnus was when their superiors refused to think anything more of the situation. She agreed to work with her companion to find any information on the creatures, looking through the library for clues and evidence. Cygnus came to her, angrily stating that the clan's Ice ambassador, Tundra, spoke of a scientist who tried to do research based on "outrageous conspiracies" and "imagination". It surprised Sagitari how the higher ranking dragons didn't acknowledge any of the points being brought forth. But she didn't expect Cygnus to be so furious. The Ridgeback was passionate, she understood that, but she had never seen them act with such hostility. When she tried to calm them down, Cygnus just accused her of ignoring the bigger picture and left. The Imperial could tell that her friend had a plan, and she didn't know if she could stop it in time.

The decision to not interfere would haunt her for years. Cygnus disappeared, and at first Sagitari assumed they were just out on a patrol. But then days, weeks, months, and years passed. She got increasingly worried and scoured through the clan's territory to find her best friend, but they were nowhere to be found. Eventually her family and other friends convinced her that Cygnus may be gone for good. She refused to accept it, but after so many years, she finally lost hope and made a small memorial in her room. Cygnus would never be forgotten by her, even if they truly were gone.

The best and worst news Sagitari had ever gotten arrived.

"Sagitari, someone in the woods attacked us. They were claiming to be Cygnus, speaking of how we'd all forgotten them."

That didn't sound like Cygnus at all. But the Imperial couldn't hold back her enthusiasm, albeit shock at her friend's actions.

"Are you sure it's them?" she asked. "Are they alright?"

"I don't know. They refused to answer any more questions and we had to run. But if it really is them, you know them better than anyone else, don't you? Tell them to stop, please. You may be the only one they'll listen to."

Cygnus' cruelty was something the Imperial never expected from them, but the fact that they spoke of being forgotten filled her with unbearable guilt. She should've looked harder, then that attack may have been avoidable. Would Cygnus really listen to her? She never meant to abandon them. She was heartbroken being told that her best friend, who felt like a sibling to her, may have been gone forever. But now, if it really is them, maybe she can help. It's better late than never. If she lost them a second time, she'd never forgive herself.

She walked into the woods with reinforcements nearby, but keeping their distance. Her golden armor stood out against the darkness, but that was exactly her intention. She wanted Cygnus to see her. Carefully, she removed her helmet and looked around the foliage.

"Cygnus? Are you there? It's me, Sagitari, remember?"

No response. Sagitari grew nervous, unconsciously clutching her helmet, but she forced herself to relax. She didn't want to look like she feared her best friend.

"As soon as I reveal myself, you'll capture me."

That voice wasn't at all what Sagitari remembered. It sounded hoarse and grating, impossibly low, and breathy. She couldn't ignore the putrid stench gradually increasing in intensity, and the sounds of slow movement nearby.

"It's alright, you can trust me," Sagitari tried to reassure them. "I'm your best friend, remember?"

"Then why did you leave me here, you liar?"

Cygnus' sudden vicious growl startled the Imperial. She never heard Cygnus speak to her like that, ever. This was the first time they genuinely called her a nasty name like that or insulted her so harshly. But she couldn't run away from them. What kind of friend would she be to further betray their trust?

"You have every right to be angry with me. But can't you see that attacking citizens of our home and soldiers is the wrong way of handling this?"

"Nothing else would get your attention. I'd have had a better chance of throwing a pebble at the Southern Icefield and hitting the Icewarden than to get in touch with you."

Though the insult cut her deeply, Sagitari refused to give up hope. She had to get her friend back, whatever it took.

"Cygnus, I'm so sorry I wasn't there sooner. But we don't have to be separated like this anymore. We don't have to fight anymore. Please, come home."

"The guards will arrest me first chance they get."

"Then I'll do the best I possibly can to give you the lightest possible consequence. I'll make sure you have a place at home, and-"

"Oh, shut up with your naïve garbage! I didn't come here to talk about the life we could have. I'm here to make sure everybody knows what happens when they abandon their so-called heroes."

Cygnus snapping at her made her stop. She noticed a drop of some dark oily substance fall from a tree branch overhead, and through the darkness she began to make out the shape of a gargantuan webbing of that substance. Perched right above her was the tall shape of a Ridgeback, but they smelled horrible. The reeking odor of petrol and rotten meat made Sagitari sick with disgust and fear. They had lost their shiny blue scales, left with black chitinous armor and an extra two pairs of twisted legs ending in sharp points.

That's when Sagitari's eyes widened in horror. The chitin, the draconic appearance, the otherworldly feel of their presence...

Cygnus had been right all along.

"I waited for so long, trying to find anyone to help me. But every time I tried to confront anybody, they either ran away or tried to kill me. I've realized that it's far better to punish all of you ungrateful worms by showing you what happens when you don't have someone to defend you. Maybe I was just expendable and that's why you left me, or maybe I was in the way of your ambitions and you willingly let me rot."

"No! None of that is true, Cygnus. I always loved you like a part of my family. We grew up together, we played games together, we trained together, we fought battles together, we got through our losses and celebrated our victories, and we got to have an elite status in the capital. We never did it without the other. I'd never leave you, not again. I don't know if I'll be able to take another year without you back home."

Cautiously, the Imperial raised a paw to reach for Cygnus, even if she had difficulty getting high enough to touch the branch. She pushed away the thought of how gross the sticky fluid and the awful smell were because that didn't matter right now. Cygnus needed her help. She had to do everything in her power to make things right again. They could go back to the way it was before. They could continue their life together as best friends.

"... You want to help me, but you didn't act soon enough."

The smell just got more intense, and Sagitari was caught off guard when Cygnus lunged at her. She screamed, desperately trying to defend herself, but she couldn't being herself to lay a talon on the Ridgeback. Perhaps she had this coming and it was only a matter of time.

Even having the other guards as backup didn't work, because they couldn't stop Cygnus either. Sagitari could do nothing but watch as they all fell victim to Cygnus' brutality. She lay on the ground severely injured, but nothing would hurt her as much as knowing that Cygnus had been corrupted and gone mad, and she did nothing. Her last dying thoughts were nothing but grief, shame, and most of all, remorse.

"I couldn't save them. I failed in the worst way possible. I failed my best friend. I wish I could go back, do everything differently, but... it's over.

Now they're truly gone, and it's all my fault."

...

... My best friend.

I didn't call her that for so long just because. She actually... meant something to me.

... We did experience almost everything together. She really did want to help. But she took too long. She didn't try hard enough.

But she was still someone special. Someone deserving of that title, to be called a best friend. Maybe even more than that. She was like family to me, too.

She still betrayed me. If I meant so much to her she would've tried harder.

All the times we had together, all those memories, just to come down to this.

...

... What have I done?

My best, dearest, sweetest friend...

... I'm sorry.

When the patrol didn't return, a few of the other soldiers who knew Sagitari decided to search for her. She wasn't alone. Was this threat bigger than they all thought? Were they wrong to have dismissed it for so long?

All they found were the bodies of fallen dragons, all subjected to the carnage of this unknown enemy. But most unusual was a heap nearby, mainly dirt and stone, but it had been covered by rocks and stone slabs. There were prints, dark smudges of black tar in the shapes of long talons, all over the place. The heap was near an evergreen with odd scrapings that the scouts could make into words.

Sagitari
A best friend, a dedicated soldier, and one who won't be forgotten

Perhaps the oddest detail at the scene was an alabaster locket, stained with that same tar coating everything else. If the search party's suspicions were correct, Sagitari really was dead. But did the culprit actually bury her and make the memorial?

If that were the case, perhaps this beast has some goodness left in them after all.
