A scavenger with a glass eye. The manner in which Duskfort lost her original eye is quite a mundane one, so thankfully, the ways she's lost her glass ones are incredibly exciting affairs. Scavenging brings one to all sorts of places glass should never be brought, as you can imagine. And there are dire consequences. Grandma's fine porcelain vases would cry at the mere sight of the valleys this adventurer has tossed herself headfirst into, more tumbleweed than dragon. Duskfort herself actually is a grandmother, come to think of it, but it isn't a matter she's given much thought. The spirit of treasure awaits. And besides, it's not like they'll stop being her grandkids any time soon. Oh, right, her glass eye. Well, one time it was plucked straight from the cavity by a ferocious burrowing badger. Apparently it kind of looked like a berry? The thing popped it into his mouth and upchucked it almost as fast. Duskfort swears it almost shot near-perfectly back into her socket. Near-perfect, mind you. If it were perfect, it wouldn't be a believable story, now, would it? The sheer force of a typhoon once washed it clean out. It overtook a boat of temporary crew she had gathered, and most were lost. And still she scoured the infamous ship graveyard the Tidelord's waters held, undeterred and with a severe lack of depth perception. See, when her prosthetics aren't popping out of her skull, the hip-side contraption she wears provides the snapper with a base level of spatial awareness she would otherwise lack. It is a shadow of what a seeing dragon's eyes could capture, but you'll find that this barely matters. Many a would-be attacker who has disabled her aide stills finds themselves at the mercy of her brute force. Having long since adapted to her single eye, the aide only makes seeing slightly easier - you can put away any hopes of fully incapacitating her. Hmm, but no time to spend on wholly one thing. Onto the next story: did you know that extreme heat can make glass melt? And that, incidentally, the Ashfall Wastes are very hot? ...oh, no, nothing quite that grotesque. She merely bent down over the wrong lava pool while reinserting it. Slippery claws, and all. Now onto the matter of why she's in all of these places. Duskfort is, as you have probably pieced together, a scavenger. And a damned good one, at that. In her youth she was the captain of an airship so glorious that it might have been mistaken by a lesser dragon as some sort of deity when it glided above... What are you interrupting me for? ...where the original eye went? It was a simple birth defect. You are being weirdly insistent on figuring that out. Are you actually going to sit and listen, or shall we run down the list of her every ailment? The calluses are obvious, and the arthritis is recent, though she thinks the pressure changes in the desert might have exacerbated it-yeah, we're good now? Great, excellent. I've completely lost my train of thought thanks to your excellent little burst of curiosity, and now you'll never know where her tale goes from here. Or what a bicorn whale had to do with her next missing eye. |
