Saffrony

One night, as a young hatchling, Saffrony saw a dark shape twisting playfully through the night sky. When he told his friends about it, the shape was gone and they teased him about seeing things. But he knew what he saw, so he spent his nights watching, waiting, searching for the figure to show itself again.

Grown, he traveled from clan to clan, asking if they knew of any nightly figures that twisted through the skies, eyes glowing with multiple pinpoints of earthy sparks. No one knew of the dragons he searched so diligently for, so he would leave for another clan.

Until finally, one day, he came across a nameless clan in the swamps. "Um, excuse me," he approached an important-looking Coatl at the edges of the lands, "but I'm looking for someone. Someone dark and mysterious with multiple sparks in his eyes." The coatl smiled benevolently at Saffrony and motioned for him to enter the borders and follow him.

Saffrony was led to an empty glade and told to wait. After an hour, he was tired of waiting so he sighed and prepared to leave what he thought was another dead end, so he spun around and prepared to launch into the sky and clear the treetops. But there, just above the trees and watching him, was the creature of his search. Dark and shiny with bright wings, the dragon watched him with multi-faceted eyes that drew him in, hypnotized him, eyes that knew him.

"It's you," he whispered to the beautiful creature. "I've searched for you for so long!"

Heironymus looked at the dragon who had found him and saw an unparalleled beauty in the fellow Spiral's soul, a beauty that hypnotized him as he hypnotized others. "Your soul," he breathed, "is so pure! How can you exist?"

Startled, Saffrony grinned and reached for his new friend to boop their nose with his. "Want to fly with me?" he asked Heironymus, who blinked in confusion for a moment before he, too, grinned and nodded.

Most nights, they can be seen flying through the trees in an elaborate game of tag. Or sprawled on a branch entwined together. Or sometimes they are just curled up in their tree-borne lair talking quietly about their day.
