Biography

Love can be a glorious cascade of light upon the lives of those affected. Love can bring joy and content. But no story is ever as perfect as it may seem, and there can be no light without darkness to contrast against.
Arthog knew this from the beginning. His life had been tragic enough already, and he had grown up in a cruel world. His father had left when he was just a hatchling, and he was raised by his bitter mother, who would regularly take the time to remind him of the treachery of romance.
Even so, when he met Caelum, he knew what he had been told mattered not, for love was more powerful that any fear he had ever felt at the thought of being left behind.

Caelum had ventured to the heart of the festival, and was merrily skipping through the crowds. The Starfall Celebration had always been her favourite time of year, simply because of the magic in the air. She could sense it on the breeze, even stronger than it usually was in the Starfall Isles. Music could be heard playing over the jolly banter of the festival goers, and the scent of popcorn and cotton candy wafted in between the enthralled dragons.
Dodging a few giggling hatchlings, Caelum made her way to the fortune tellers. She had always loved the little fortune teller stalls, even though she never truly believed them when they told her she would 'Meet a leafy fate'.

She slipped quietly between the silky curtains of the entrance, and wandered across to the centre of the tent, where a young but wise looking tundra sat watching her.
"Hello! I'm Caelum. Could you tell me my fortune please?"
The tundra smiled, a toothy grin which unnerved Caelum just a little. "Of course."
She clasped Caelum's paws in hers, closed her eyes and began to hum. A dramatic gasp, and her eyes flew open, staring at Caelum in horror. "Romance... But you're bound to a fate of leaves and branches."
"Heh, that's what they all tell me. Thanks!" Paying no attention to the dread in the tundra's eyes, Caelum walked out with a beam on her face. The veilspun had always been a little naive , never really wondering why each fortune teller told her the exact same thing. Never once considering the possibility that their powers were real, and they were telling the truth..

Arthog was just heading towards the popcorn stand when a pretty green veilspun crashed into him outside the fortune tellers tent.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" She exclaimed, reaching down to help him up from the ground. Smiling apologetically, Arthog accepted and gave a nervous laugh.
"Its quite alright, really I should have been looking where I was going."
"Could I buy you anything to make up for it?" She asked, a sparkle in her eyes.
"Sure. What's your name?"
"Caelum."
"Arthog."
Both dragons smiled. The day had just gotten much more exciting.

The rest of the day, the Veilspuns explored the fair together. After many rides and one too many pots of popcorn, Caelum and Arthop left fair to watch the sunset from the peak of one of islands. It was a beautiful evening, filled with early stars and silent ships on the rosy waters below. Scatterings of winged silhouettes smudged the horizon, a few clusters of dragons flying towards the dying sun. Perhaps, Caelum thought as she watched in companionable silence, they were treasure seekers who had heard the tales of a new and glorious deity who resided where the sun sunk into its grave and rewarded those who found him. Imagining these things always lifted Caelum's spirits, and so she sighed contentedly as the last shreds of light wavered over the distant sea, then dived bravely beneath the waves, leaving the land to be covered by shadow.
Leaning on Arthog's shoulder, Caelum knew her place. Right here, upon this peak. With the dragon she knew she loved.
But certainty is dangerous, and when the fates become tired of the many happy endings in the world, they begin to play. And their play is the most dangerous of all.

Arthog awoke to a rhythmic breathing beside him. The warmth of a new day and a loving companion soaked into him until he could take a deep breath and rise in a haze of happiness. Turning to face Caelum, he smothered a gasp of shock. Sprouting from her minty locks of veil were two small branches. He could swear they hadn't been there the previous day... Had they? He shook her awake, and she mumbled something inconceivable before jolting fully awake.
"Arthog?" She murmured, opening bleary eyes.
"Hey Caelum." He smiled gently, "I just wanted to check... Have you always had those branches on your head?"

He tilted his head in worry, and she felt a small wave of panic. Caelum brushed her paws over her head, and sure enough, two small branches were sprouting from her head. She shrieked, then clamped her paws over her mouth and took lots of short, fast breaths.
'A leafy fate...'
It was happening. It was true. It was...
"Arthog, what's happening to me?" She cried, a tear slipping down her cheek.
"I don't know, precious." He stroked her wings, then jumped back as the branches inched just a little longer.
By that point, Caelum was terrified. Why was this happening to her? What had she done wrong?

____________________________
A cackle thundered from the sky.
"Your fate is sealed, we hope you're happy, we gave you what you want. You now belong upon this peak, with your one and only love!"
Arthog hissed at the grey, stormy clouds, but turned back to Caelum at the sound of a desperate squeal.
The branches were even longer now, almost elegant, sprouting green leaves. But Caelum was a mess, a look of pure terror smeared across her features, and her scales were turning woody colour of...
Brown. She was turning to wood.

Caelum knew it was over. All her hopes and dreams, crushed in those few seconds. Everything, gone. Everything but Arthog.
"I love you. I love you more than I can bear." She whispered, as she felt her throat begin to seal up.
"No... You're not leaving... You can't... Everything is fine!"
"Goodbye-"

And she was gone. A wooden figure, shaded by a canopy of her own lush branches, standing alone and forever still atop a silent starfall peak.
Dragons would speak of the lonely maiden of the peaks, who watched the early stars come out, and the ships sail, and the dragons fly. And then they would speak of her desperate lover, still waiting by her side after the many years. Driven mad by love, they said. That's what love does, they said. Because when all is said and done, love can be a glorious cascade of light upon the lives of those affected. Love can bring joy and content. But no story is ever as perfect as it may seem, and there can be no light without darkness to contrast against.
