“It’s normal to be afraid of what you don’t understand, but showing that fear is broadcasting weakness to those who might want to hurt you.”

“So you’re afraid of things too?”

The Coatl pauses, then scowls at his apprentice. “Of course not! I was scared when I was a hatchling, but not anymore.”

The apprentice studies his mentor’s face for a moment, then returns to rearranging the items on his desk. He’s certain that his mentor is afraid of something, but the dark Coatl seems determined to keep his fears hidden.

The Coatl watches his apprentice closely, occasionally pointing out something or other that needs to be fixed, silently hoping that when he’s gone, his apprentice will summon his spirit from the void for a few minutes to talk, to listen, to break the monotony of nothingness that he’s certain will surround him.
