Lizetta found Tarak deep in The Flesh Market, broken and chained. She learned that he had spent all his life as a breeder and that this was the first time he had ever seen the outside world She left and returned with her clanmates to free him and when she asked his name, he replied that he had never been given one. He and Lizetta return to the Keep. Tarak tried his best to serve her but with her aggressive refusals and frequent raids with her clanmates, Claw drifted silently around the Keep, freezing whenever he was approached by another.
He found that he was most comfortable in the Vault with Iroh and Yaen and one day, his lack of name came up. "Have you ever wanted one?" "I was never worthy of one." "And why is that?" He couldn't answer that and Iroh continued. "Names are a powerful thing, WildClaw. The one you begin life with has its own power but, sometimes, the one you chose for yourself is that one that matters."
Iroh's words stick in Tarak's head. He begins to take small steps out of his comfort zone: speaking a few words in passing in the halls, making eye contact, making small talk at meals. The tales brought back with the Copper Claw clan ignite a small yearning in his chest. He sits on the feelings and thoughts for weeks until he broaches the subject with Iroh.
"Their cause is far nobler than putting food on our tables and items in our hoard. If you ask, they will take you and teach you. You will learn to fight, provide, and protect those who need it. Does that interest you?"
"It...it does. I would very much like to learn to...protect."
He chooses the name Tarak because it means Defender. He deeply regrets being unable to fight for the children that were taken from him. He goes with the CCClan and learns to fight and goes with them to the FleshMarkets secretly hoping to find one of his children. At the Keep, he was drawn to the hatching room and watches over nests and hatchlings if the parents need a break or if a young one is brought in parentless.
