Biography

the old hunters
blackglass outpost

Descendants of the Old Hunters Covenant are pledged before birth to police- and put down- the moon-maddened offspring of Karak and Alruccabah. They may resist, but it rarely pays better than their inheritance.

--///--

Maybe you regret it. Maybe you don't. You've long learned it is wiser to bow your head and bare your teeth and give into the the hunt, the hunt, the hunt. Your mouth tastes of blood.

You don't remember when it didn't.

...

Moonlight is only sunlight reflected; it cannot do harm, not alone. Keep this a mantra. Keep your eyes down.

...

Raal keeps her gaze steady, just over your left shoulder. You do the same; her blood is not her fault but yours is. She is the sharp of your claws and the hum behind your eyes and the scars and all of the death. You did not ask for this. It is your birthright.

The last time you saw your mother you looked her steady in the eye, perched over the still-warm shape of your first kill. She carefully tucked one glittering blue feather into your own crest, where even now it rustles. It has long lost its shimmer.

You were so proud, then.

You did not know what her avoidance meant, then. You did not know the chill winds off the Tidelord's Sea, then, or the brilliance of the Observatory. You did not know what it was to walk with ghosts.

...

You cannot help it but still it is a thrill. There really is nothing like it: howl and call and chase, scorching moonlight on your shoulders and wind in your feathers. There is nothing to feel so alive. It always ends in death.

There is truth to your reputation. You are the best there is.

...

Once, and only once, you lend your teeth as mercenary for hire. It is quick and easy and profitable, compared to your standard fare. The bitter taste burns in the back of your throat. It does not leave.

...

There's blood on your teeth and feathers when you collapse against the stone. You can walk no further. Your sins have caught up and turned themselves upon you, but it will be okay.

You have not feared death in years.

A legend spears the sky above you; you marvel distantly and see your own end in equal. It is as beautiful as you have ever imagined, its highest spire cutting the moon to take its weight from you. It feels like absolution.

...

You wonder if you could ever have a home. You curl tighter on yourself, staring at the horizon. It is easier to breathe here than anywhere has ever been, but your time is running out. The moon will rise in hours and it stirs in your chest: the hunt comes soon, again. You cannot shy away from it.

Breathe in, breathe out. A moment of kindness is all you need, and so much more than you deserve.

You know the stories. No one returns.

...

There is something like stars where the moon usually sits heavy when the spires appear on the horizon. It is a silhouette every child of the Waste knows, and few have ever seen. It will not save you. It is not a second chance: there cannot be forgiveness for all you have done, and you do not want it.

But the sun shines a little brighter, and for the first time in years, you raise your head to meet it.
