Biography

LEvoIE4.png

Uh-oh, looks like this good-hearted scholar wandered a little too far from his home lair (Sofia007, 547334), and now he's off to see the world! If you ever feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here. If you don't want another traveler in return, he could also be dropped off at the rest hub.
Hywel was grateful that his first few stops were uneventful, for he preferred to travel at a sedate pace; thus his stay at the crowded travelers' rest hub was a little more lively than he was entirely comfortable with. But he continued on to the Sunbeam Lanternhouse... where he found himself immersed in an overwhelming number of hospitable activities. To be sure, they were enjoyable - he particularly appreciated the dance troupe's performances - but it was all a little much, especially since he did not know how to approach the subject of his fancy: Chie.

Her interest in lineage attracted his notice due to the similarities to his own field of study, that of historical law as it related to inheritance. But she was so full of drive, he found her intimidating.

He was a little surprised when Yarrow swooped in, arranging a quiet dinner for just the two of them one night. But after some initial awkwardness, he found their discussion wonderfully stimulating.

He quietly took Yarrow aside a little later, thanking him for his intervention and informing him that he and Chie were expecting three hatchlings.

He traveled on into the Icewarden’s domain to visit a clan known as the frozen Stronghold. To the east stood the prison, West was the Rimebone stockade. Even though the accommodations were warm and comfortable in this icy world, tales at the clan’s local tavern had him at unease. Stories of the horrors they had to drag back from the prison after escaping made him feel a bit unsettled. The stories of this unseen boogeymen made his stay short lived.

His next stay was in a tranquil inn called the Helianthus Haven, not far from Lanternlea Port. The food was good, the Coatl innkeeper was beautiful though not interested in more than a light flirtation, the beds were comfortable, and the library was nearby. What more could a dragon want? He even had a surprise reunion with his rebellious daughter Nomiki, which was enjoyable, though exhausting. Eventually he found himself becoming involved with a Snapper knight of the clan, Hestia - who was interested in far more than a light flirtation - and soon enough he was father to a pair of Snapper daughters. Hestia assured him that they'd be well cared for and trained for the knighthood in time. That was enough for him - he loved his hatchlings, as he had all of his children, but there was nothing restful about parenting two curious little Snappers who never slept, especially not with Nomiki teaching her little half-sisters all kinds of ways to wreak havoc. He was all too ready to move on.

The next place that Hywel found himself was a beautiful garden glen called the Fount of Travelers. It seemed rather simple although colorful place, and Hywel did not plan to stay long, although there were many interesting dragons here. That was until he discovered this garden had a hidden magical library within the old oaks. Hidden behind their bark were many bookshelves, and many secrets to be found within. But what interested Hywel the most was a mysterious book in some foreign language he didn't recognize. He could feel the power emanating from it, calling to him to solve its mystery. He asked the Caretaker of the Fount of Travelers about it, who told him he had never seen the book before. Which was strange, as he organized all of the books and kept them in their proper places. Feeling excited to solve this literary mystery, Hywel set off for other clans, hopeful to find someone who knew what this book was about.

Lurching Tome

Not having a particular destination in mind, Hywel agreed to accompany a young dragon named Gale who was heading into the Shadow realm on a quest of her own. He was glad of the company ... mostly, and was happy to impart some of his more obscure knowledge to her over an evening meal.

Arriving at the Forum of the Obscured Crescent, the pair couldn't fail to notice a lively assemblage of dragons at the fringes of the Brightshade Clan. They were warmly invited to make themselves at home and stay awhile, which they accepted most gratefully.

U4aGIbI.png An enthusiatic young dragon gave them a tour of the lair and offered them their pick of apparel from the vault. Suitably attired Hywel went in search of the clan's archivist, an unassuming imperial named Elderling. He gingerly prodded the musty book cover and sniffed it suspiciously. It was surely ancient and heavy with magic, but much more than that he could not tell. One thing did stand out though. He detected a faint whiff of ozone among the book's pages, which made him think it must have originated by the coast. If only Hywel had arrived while the ancient master, Eldridge, was staying with the clan. He would surely have been able to decipher the secrets held within. Unfortunately he had departed only days previously and none of the clan had the same knowledge of arcane law and ancient tongues as he.

Hywel and Elderling studied the script in the book for several weeks, looking for some further clues as to its purpose, but they learned nothing more. They did, however, form a strong friendship during their studies and it was with some reluctance that Hywel set out once more on his journey.

Lurching Tome
After a long journey, Hywel found himself in the Honeycroft Inn, where he met a few fellow travellers. As the night grew on and the food grew cold, and they each exchanged stories of their journeys so far, Hywel pulled the heavy tome out of his rucksack, handing it to the other two travellers. "Do either of you both happen to know what this could be? I'm afraid everyone I've met so far hasn't been able to give me any answers, and the more I attempt to study it, the more questions I seem to have."

His two companions grew quiet, seemingly unnerved by the power that emanated from the book. Sparklemist, who'd been lively the whole evening, now spoke in hushed tones. "Perhaps you should show this to Cygnus."

Cygnus, the patriarch of this clan, held the tome in reverence. "Well," he said, after a few long minutes of careful inspection, "This book seems to hold many secrets that it does not wish you to discover." He looked carefully at Hywel. "I am sorry but I am not sure if I can help you much with this. The language used is not one I fully understand, and no one here has knowledge of the arcane arts." Hywel nodded, disappointed. Cygnus continued. "However, from what I've been able to glean, the secrets that this book contain are to do with knowledge. Pure knowledge, in its highest form. No doubt, whoever bound this book so strongly did not wish anyone to learn whatever was contained here."

"I hope you will make the right decision, Hywel."
