Hermen has only the haziest memories of his birth clan, of the Plateau and the winds, of brightly-colored kites against brilliant blue skies. He vaguely recalls voices and snatches of song and eyes the same honeydew green as his own. It's been so long that anything else is lost to him beneath a blanket of visions and fear.

The Sight came on him young, Hermen remembers that. His visions began almost as soon as he spilled from his shell, and they made life hard. They came without warning, trapping him in themselves, preventing him from doing much of anything for fear of being taken by the Sight at just the wrong moment and hurting himself or someone else.

Hermen was just fledging when something finally went wrong like he'd always feared. A vision took him while attempting to fly, and when it released him he was far from home, with no one and nothing he knew in sight. Too young to properly care for himself, Hermen wandered aimlessly, desperately searching for safety while still contending with his Sight.

He didn't know how long it took for Rigaudon to find him, still lost and alone and on the edge of starvation. The Skydancer took one look at Hermen and immediately took him under his metaphorical wing, nursing him back to health and protecting him from danger, watching over him during his visions, just as caring and gentle as the fragmented memories Hermen had of his parents.
