Where Siralan has no knowledge of how his egg came to be abandoned in the plague lands Mantarian knows exactly how his came to be in the earth ones. Not only did the Astral Haven's scavengers find the mutilated corpse of his unknown mother wrapped around his egg when they found it but he remembers her whispering to him in the shell that she would keep him safe. That the enemy that had destroyed her clan would never find him.

He remembers the other voice as well. The one who spoke after his mother's fell silent. The Earthshaker told him that he was his messenger to the clan who would find him for a great enemy approached and they would need the strength and unity of Earth to survive as his mother's clan had not.

Mantarian kept his council when first hatched, uncertain what his mission entailed but then Siralan was hatched and he realised he had no choice but to tell his foster parents of his own pre-hatching visions.

”It doesn't matter,” Naria said when he told her. “You are a child of our clan and this changes nothing of that. If the gods have a mission for us we will find it in time.” But he could see her puzzlement that her new clan had merited such attention.

Then came the journey and he came face to face with the evil that destroyed his mother. He knows what they are facing now and he is determined to fulfil his role and save his new family.
