Aylia has been relatively sheltered throughout her life. She was swiftly adopted by Starboreal Valley, another child to add to the growing population. After all, there's potential for everyone, isn't there? She learned quickly how to gather insects for the clan, making herself useful at every turn and hoping that hard work will be rewarded with love. She's not quite an adult yet, still growing into her awkward limbs and gangly wings. Social graces have never been her strong suit, merely being sweet and placative. Sometimes she wonders what her purpose in this world really is.

There's this boy she keeps seeing around. His scales sparkle like the darkness of the night, wings trailing like hallowed ivy and eyes gleaming like dazzling spinel. Her heart seems to stop whenever they bump into each other. She's not used to having so much attention cast her way, yet when he's there, it's like he wants to see her again. Come to think of it, there was that one night where he said he wanted to meet her outside The Fermented Fruit. It sounded so exciting, so fun, but what would the others think? She couldn't stay out after dark. She's been kicking herself since she missed the chance. Hopefully he won't think she doesn't care... words don't describe how much she does.

Then what? What could she possibly do to prove herself? She's just another gatherer, just a face in the crowd. What's so impressive about her? Maybe she can do something to make him see someone special. Someone worthy of being a friend... of being more? Of being a girlfriend, of being, is it even worth imagining... a mate? Maybe sneaking out of her quarters after dark wouldn't be so bad after all. If she's lucky, it could lead to something exciting, something new and beautiful. Something she's been needing all her life.
