History

____SSythlar grinned. His crystalline wings flashed in the sunlight as he sped through the forest, dodging branches that the larger dragon could not avoid. He had pulled away now, just out of view, but he could hear the Mirror dragon knife ruthlessly through the bracken. His lithe, serpentine body threaded through the gnarling roots of a dead tree, hollowed out after years of being gnawed away at by bugs, but still miraculously standing. Sythlar snaked through the hollowed interior, stopping to rest inside one of the more solid branches. He knew he should have been worried about it breaking and sending him crashing into the path of the irate Mirror, but for as long as Sythlar could remember he had always had an inherent conviction that he would be able to wiggle himself out of anything.

____He remembered stealing for the first time.
He had been a hatchling, and it had been a small emerald brooch that had shone like the Gladekeeper’s eyes (Sythlar, of any dragon in Sornieth, would know. He had seen them up close while on a personal raiding mission in her hoard. But, that was a story for another day). His entire life, he had been taught not to steal or lie, because no matter what, he would always get caught.
Sythlar knew that was a lie. Ironic, eh?
And it was so incredibly easy. Easy to steal, easy to get away, easy not to get caught.
The rush of adrenaline that had filled him as he slipped the brooch out of the clan’s hoard took a while to dissipate. His stomach had hurt for a few days, and every time a dragon addressed him he was sure it was to punish him for his theft.
But it never happened. So he did it again.
And again.
Honestly, it couldn’t have been any easier. He pulled off more complicated, dangerous, expensive thefts, and got a small thrill at the secrecy, at the adrenaline rush, sometimes even at the chase. And every time, blame slid off him like water off a duck’s back. Here was something he was good at, something that was as natural to him as breathing. And Sythlar figured, who were they to judge? They were liars, every bit as much as he was. They shrouded their deception behind the veil of societal norms, but sometimes the rules were made to be broken.
Sometimes you had to make your own rules.

____The branch began to crack beneath his talons.
Laughter bubbled in Sythlar’s throat, as hoarse and brittle as the splintering bark.
And he escaped once again.

____The most wanted thief in Sorneith, Sythlar is. He carries a roguish charm about him, his long mane braided back out of the way, a violet strike across the vivid cyan of his back. He is one who can escape everything. He is the unstoppable thief. The legend whispered between beggars and criminals alike. His cunning and guile is whispered about in quiet moments. Few have met this thief, as to Sythlar speaking to few outside his clan.
After all, a legendary thief must be careful, shouldn't he?
