Katarya was born to a Drone father, and was born a Drone herself, as she believed. However, one day, Katarya found herself having a consciousness of her own.

The first sign of that was her name that she identified with becoming “Katarya” instead of simply “Drone”. Then, she realised she was feeling confusion over it. She also found herself making realisations. Knowing conscious Drones had to be killed, Katarya decided she had to leave.

And leave she did. The young dragon left the lair, flying towards the distance. She had no goal, only to get as far away as possible. Her heart was filled with panic as she ran from the Consciousness.

And then, at the edge of a river, Katarya was stopped by a Nocturne.

“Are you running from something? If so, how can we help?” Shim asked, seeing that Katarya was obviously panting. The Skydancer could only shake her head. She didn’t want Shim to get hurt!

Shim didn’t take the hint. Scooping Katarya up in their paws, they dove into the bubble and emerged within the Lair.

There, Candice-having received a vision-flew to greet the duo. She explained that something large and menacing was chasing Katarya.

“Yeah, that’s right! You have to let me go!” Katarya agreed.

Candice turned her gaze to the Defected Drone and let her crest turn a bright yellow in amusement. “I didn’t say we were throwing you out. We’re going to help you. After all, we haven’t gone up against many opponents, and this will be good training. Besides, we’re kind of trained in making creatures that shouldn’t have free will have free will.”

“You can’t! The Hivemind isn’t like anything you’ve seen. It’s completely set on one thing, and how many you kill won’t do anything to it!” Katarya yelled.

“Might I note you have no idea what we’ve experienced?” A voice holding a tone of superiority appeared. Monarch flew up to Katarya and smiled. “If we can deviate Androids, we can sow seeds of doubt in a Hivemind and make them sentient.”

Eventually, Katarya reluctantly agreed to stay. This clan was...strong. Confident. Individual, yet united. Katarya felt like she was witnessing the impossible. Dragons can really accomplish miracles.

It was only much later that, after digging deep into the Hivemind knowledge the dragons had, Emeralda came to explain to Katarya that descendents of Drones nearly always have free will. The Consciousness could be shocked at first, but it certainly wasn't unusual. Katarya was honestly quite embarrassed that she didn't know it. Apparently she wasn't in much of any danger. However, she explained to Emeralda that it still felt a bit off. It sounded like only part of the story.

Emeralda's eventual explanation was ""Maybe you're becoming a Hivemind's Consciousness as well?""
