Biography

Gale's Thoughts: Amias

Amias is the kind of dragon other dragons go to war for. It just so happens that Amias would rather the dragons fighting over him just leave him be.

Amias and Varya both come from very "traditional" clans, but Amias's was definitely a bit more harsh in their criticisms of him. There were many expectations piled on his shoulders to marry someone of higher standing or at the very least marry to form an alliance with a potentially useful clan. Amias loves being around other dragons, but prefers to listen and learn, rather than talk and schmooze, and he definitely has a limit to how much he's willing to socialize. His parents wanted him to be the perfect son, the most charismatic individual he could be, the "ideal pearlcatcher royalty" with every other species beneath him (despite not being a pure-blood himself), and he was constantly anxiety-ridden as a result.

Things only got worse when he stopped talking altogether. Ever since I've known him, at least, I've known Amias to be selectively mute, communicating in gestures and sign language or writing rather than spoken words most of the time. It's so much better now than it was decades ago, but most of the time, trauma never really goes away, and he definitely has his worse days. Some days, as happy as he is to see some of us, talking is hard, and he can't maintain eye contact with anyone who's not Varya or Cael. One of the few dragons in the clan he's comfortable talking to on a regular basis is Paradise, and I don't think I'll ever forget the day when he had an hours-long conversation with her about her butterfly garden project around the bonfire. I remember Cael pressed against Amias's side with a small smile on his face, just staring and listening to him talk, and after Paradise left, bringing their foreheads together and whispering,

"Gods, I love your voice."

Sometimes those words just play through my mind, unbidden, and my heart wants to explode all over again. How Amias's family never saw how good Cael and Varya are for him I'll never understand.

When Amias does talk to some of the other clan members while he's here, it's easy to see how fascinated he is by other cultures, how eager he is to learn, how he does his best to memorize everything he can about the dragons he meets, and how much he wants a place to stay so he can follow his passions. He may not always feel like he can say what's on his mind, but the giddiness is there, and his partners are so incredibly fond of his enthusiasm.

Amias's family are still after him, even now. They still hunt their son, who fell in love with an imperial, the pearlcatchers' most stereotypical rival, and a shadow dragon, a "betrayal" of his own element. It's why the Outcast Trio don't stay in Chiaroscuro permanently, despite their visits getting longer and longer each time and more and more frequent as the years go by. They're constantly on the run, never getting the stability they all so obviously crave.

...It occurs to me that I am the kind of dragon who would go to war for Amias. Should his family ever breach our borders and try to take him, they will have one angry clan leader and her ferocious dysfunctional family to deal with, because he is ours. If he cannot find love from them when he so clearly loves everyone else, then Varya and Cael will not be alone in their fight to protect him. We have one runaway princess already; we can certainly handle a few more royal strays.
