Biography

Gale's Thoughts: Cael

Cael was actually the first of the Outcast Trio I met, all those many years ago.

It was less of an actual meeting and more of a chase through the sparse woods surrounding Chiaroscuro's borders, flinging insults at the one who'd nicked some of our food, blankets, and even medicine during one of our elemental festival potlucks. Most dragons know better than to try and steal from us, and with a few rare exceptions, no one is daring enough to try (Eel mocked Cael's attempt later, calling it "sloppy and far too flashy for a guy wearing a hood to conceal his identity").

We probably would have caught him eventually if it weren't for the fact that he reached his destination and the sight was enough to make us stop in our tracks. He'd stopped in front of a pair of dragons, sword at the ready, a look in his eyes that showed no fear of death. But he was shaking with some kind of emotion, and looking at the dragons behind him, it was all too obvious. An imperial, beaten bloody and snarling, unable to stand but curled protectively around the smaller figure of another unconscious pearlcatcher who was breathing like he'd forgotten how his lungs were supposed to work.

For all that pearlcatchers and imperials are so often seen to have disdain and even hatred for each other, there was nothing to be seen between these three but love and loyalty.

Even after I told the guards to stand down, Cael was not convinced of our good intentions. I'm not sure he would have given in at all had the imperial not intervened, gesturing toward their sickly companion with a beseeching sound that I can still conjure up in my mind without effort. His entire body slumped in defeat before he looked me dead in the eye and whispered,

"Please save him."

With more effort than I anticipated, we made it the short way back to Chiaroscuro's borders, and we kept Cael behind for questioning while Peril got to work treating his companions. He was flighty and stubborn, snarling out his answers half of the time and casting furtive glances in the direction the others had gone every few seconds. He didn't stop twitching until we finally took him back to them, and he didn't relax until he'd thoroughly checked them both over head to toe and buried his face in the other pearlcatcher's shoulder, centering himself in their presence.

Even now, after many decades where the three of them come and go on the regular, I still see a little bit of that old wariness whenever Cael comes back to our little city. He usually doesn't calm down until he sees Amias and Varya talking with their friends; he needs that visual reminder that everything is normal. He takes his role in protecting them very seriously, and his lovers are equally grateful for and exasperated by his hypervigilance.

On the nights they come to the bonfire, Amias and Varya insist on having him squished between them, doing their best to get him to enjoy himself. I'm pleased to say that over the years they've succeeded more than they've failed, and I'm even more pleased to say that it's a little easier for him each time. Cael may be stubborn and overly-protective, but he's finally learning to let himself enjoy life with the dragons he loves most, and it's wonderful to see.
