Biography
__._ |
They call her Rohan. The Mother and the Father. This wasn’t her name, of course. But she liked the sound of it, much more than her old name. What she didn’t like however, were the questions, about where she came from. Who she was. It was painfully clear by the color of her eyes, the shape of her face that she didn’t belong within the Empire. Yet, she was here and the Defiler was not. Home used to be golden, warm, colors that were both vibrant and inviting. After the Defiler arrived, everything had soured, dulled, turned in a familiar color of murk and decay. Broken only by the flash of gold and ruby that foretold, that warned. She had been well fed once, round and fat like any child should have been. Then she was only skin and bones and so very hungry. Look at those skinny hands, those long fingers. Delicious, aren’t they? The Defiler was right. The first bites were delicious and for a short while, she no longer felt hunger or thirst. The pain was almost pleasant in how it distracted her. But she wasn’t alone, she was merely one of many and no one cared about her bones anymore. Skittish in nature, she smelled the trouble before it could come and destroy her fully. A challenger arose and as the Defiler was distracted, she bolted. Ran away and away, further and further. She saw the sun go down, but never up again as she dug herself through bramble and thorns. Ignored the way they cut open her face, her skin, tugged at her hair. As if they wanted to say; Turn back, there is nothing to find here. Lies, all of it, She found a city hidden behind thorns and shrouded in darkness. When she squinted her eyes, she could fool herself into thinking the glow of the candles, lanterns and sparks were stray rays of the sun. It made the Dust bearable. Even for the short while she spent there. Picking the wrong pocket could have ended with her losing the remainder of her hand. The Father’s grip was tight enough to easily crush her bones into dust when he first caught her. Yet, instead of tossing her in the same ditch as the chalk covered bodies, she was brought into a home, large and imposing, filled with warm and empty rooms. The questions came and went unanswered, when she refused to speak, to share, acceptance took its place. | ___ |
