━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ❋ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Fire dragons are naturally drawn to sources of heat, especially when it comes time to nest. Indeed, Fire eggs are best incubated in lava pools, and as such, many dragons come to find themselves building nests among the crags and cracks of volcanoes. But what happens when a volcano erupts? Unlike other regions where volcanic activity can be tracked by a Flight's fastidious geologists, in the Ashfall Wastes, volcanic activity is known to be spontaneous, and rarely gives dragons time to evacuate. Pyroclastic flows can overtake dragons in seconds upon eruption, burying nesters underneath several tons of molten rock and boiling hot ash. But while still dangerous, it's far from deadly for Fire dragons, whose resistance to heat is legendary. In fact, exposure to the intense heat and pressure of a pyroclastic flow seems to have a transformative effect on Fire dragons- if they can manage to burrow their way out from underneath the flows. It's not unheard of for Fire dragons caught in a pyroclast to go missing, only to emerge somewhere between 15-35 days from what should have been certain doom. However, a few of these dragons, exposed to the heat & pressure of the pyroclast, permanently change form from flesh & scale to a liquid lava core entombed in cooled crust. And while they do tend to be swept further down the rocky slope, buoyed by lava flows and hot ash gusts, it is not uncommon for Fire eggs exposed to a volcano's wrath to emerge from their shells bearing a similar appearance to the adult dragons who manage to make their way to the surface. These eggs are often adopted by clans dedicated to rescuing eggs from the wrath of volcanoes, or fostered until their sires & dams emerge. But despair not! Dragons changed by a pyroclastic flow are blessed with intense, powerful boosts to their natural Fire magic and abilities, including unique magma-bending powers, super-heated fire spells, or the ability to turn to molten rock and back again at will. Most come to enjoy their new appearance as well! Some regions even revere these individuals for their unique prowess with fire & magma- so much so, that devout Fire dragons sometimes choose to take up residence along a volcano's outcroppings, awaiting their turn to be tested by a pyroclastic flow. |
