Alpha Carinae

Canopus, Alpha Carinae, is the second brightest star in the night sky, after Sirius. The origin of the name is uncertain. It is generally believed that it was the name of the mythical navigator for Menelaus of Sparta during the Trojan War.

Canopus is a white bright giant star located in the constellation Carina. With an absolute magnitude of -5.71, it is the most luminous star within several hundred light years of the Sun.

Canopus lies in the far southern sky. At the declination −52° 41′ 44.3810″, the star is invisible to most northern observers.
