ABOUT

Brought out of long hibernation by the expansion of the clan of Tethys' forges, magmatic heat spread to the cavern Kore had finally slumped to rest in long years ago. Pyrmal's ever expanding work had necessitated growth of the forges and thus warmed her from her torpor: she had no way, yet, of knowing this.

She woke slowly, uncertainly. She half-expected to have been found by one of her kin - a sister or brother or other sibling, an aunt or uncle. Someone from her Murmuration. But no - there was no one around her. Just grey stone tunnels, ashy sand beneath her feet and... warmth, spreading through the stone itself. Warm and comforting. When she listened, she heard the distant sound of forgeworks.

Oh Flamecaller, she thought. How your works have grown!

She pulled herself upright, stretching out her joints and fluttering her wings. Her mane had grown even longer in her torpor; now it covered her like a cloak. Not the worst outcome she could think of, honestly - her thick mane would keep her warm if she couldn't find her way out to whatever near clan started this forgeworks or back to her old Murmuration.

Gods, she didn't even know how long she'd been asleep.

She shook her head, refocussing. The noise of someone working metal clangoured through the stone caves she stood in - that was one direction she could go in.

But she could feel, too, a breeze, one scented with plants and flowers quite unlike what she recalled from when last she'd travelled through the Flamecaller's ashy lands.

Forges were to be expected. Given the noise of the forge below she thought she could probably find her way back to. But greenery? That wasn't to be expected.

Kore shifted her shoulders, fluttered her wings, and set off.

The tunnel twisted and turned but it rose nonetheless, heading for what Kore could only assume was the surface. Though it faded as she travelled, the clangour of the forgeworks behind her echoed well enough she could still hear it. Whatever forges were here, Kore thought, they were large as well as loud.

At points the tunnels narrowed, but Veilspuns were small dragons and Kore deft and agile. She darted her way through, around twisting spires of rock, and continued up.

As she approached what could only be the surface, tree roots and vines twisted their way into the tunnel. As she neared the entry - bright sunlight just beyond reach - the vines grew so thick they choked the tunnel entrance. Kore had to claw her way onwards, writhing her way between twisted timber.

She fell unexpectedly, landed on - even more unexpectedly - thick grass. A dragonfly buzzed lazily by her and she slapped up at it, grabbed it and ate.

She had no idea how long it had been since she last ate. Good gods but she was hungry - the dragonfly made barely a dent in the pit of her stomach.

"Hello?" she called, only to almost slap herself a moment later. Yes this greenery was unexpected, yes the clangour of forgeworks below suggested that dragons lived here but - did they know what she was? Did they speak the same dialect? Would they appreciate a stranger appearing from nowhere?

Kore was quite sure the answers to all three were likely to be a resounding "No".

Still, she heard rustling through the thick greenery. Trees rose above her, bushes surrounded her, thick grass was soft beneath her feet. She could feel heavy footsteps thudding through the earth.

"Hello!" she called again, louder and clearer, if only to make sure she wouldn't get squashed and halfways in hope of a reply.

A huge pale-green head suddenly poked through the greenery.

"Hello?" it said. The word sounded similar to her own but the vowels- different, emphasis a little off. Fire dialect, certainly, but more drift than just that. "Are you lost?"

Definitely more drift than expected. Kore pulled herself upright and set herself to trying to make herself understood.

"Hello," Kore said, mimicking the other dragon's pronunciation. "I was hibernating. I woke due to the forge-warmth. I- can you understand me?"

"Pardon?" the dragon said. It stepped forward, heavy thudding footsteps. It's wings towered above them, adorned in leaves and timber, twisting thorny vines and roses. Kore felt a sudden pang of homesickness - her mother wore thorns against her skin like that, though her thorns had burst from her own skin, not woven their way across it.

Kore gestured to herself. "I," she said. "Me, myself, this one-"

The huge dragon gestured. "I am Menthe," they said. "I guard and patrol the gardens. Who are you, stranger?"

Kore almost sighed in relief. "I aem Kore," she said. "I- travel, explore, act as courier."

"Courier?" Menthe repeated. "Kore - courier?"

Kore was not sure if Menthe was stupid or if the dialectical difference really was that big for this dragon. Kore didn't even know what kind of dragon Menthe was; she'd never seen their like before. Still - more words meant more examples and Kore tried again.

"I waes sleeping, hibernating, in torpor-"

"Hibernating," repeated Menthe. "You said that before."

"Yaes," Kore said. "Caen yaou undaerstaend-"

"You're twisting your vowels," Menthe said. "You sound... old."

A chill went through Kore. She had seen but a few summers when she'd first travelled to the Flamecaller's lands, surely-

"Come mitt ei," said Menthe gently. "Limnas speaks the old dialects best."
