Biography

Ivy

The holly and the ivy
when they are both full grown
of all the trees that are in the wood
the holly bears the crown

Oh the rising of the sun
and the running of the deer
the playing of the merry harp
sweet singing in the choir

~Ivy's Hymnal~

In local folklore, Ivy is the Yuletide Sister of peace and fidelity, and the Keeper of the Ivy Plants of Sornieth. Like her sister, Holly, her Reigning time is from December 21st through to February 1st.

Dragons wishing to curry favor with her will leave pearls, greenery of any sort (fir branches, oak leaves, etc.), or perhaps small pieces of knotted twine, vines, or yarn near trailing ivy. For particularly strong favor, a dragon would be encouraged to do this in midwinter.

On Midwinter's Eve within some Lairs, some dragons choose to spend the afternoon and early evening going den to den to wish their neighbours peace and goodwill for the coming seasons in Ivy's name. They may exchange gifts or renew pairing vows with their lifemates or good friends, with the thought that as Ivy represents fidelity and this is the height of her Reigning time, the vows would be further blessed and thus stronger.

In art she is depicted as a Pearlcatcher dragon with shimering wings of jungle green and ringlets of lead grey adorning her neck, wings, shoulders, haunches, and tail, standing out against a snow-white body. She wears a white rose thorn crown, and she is often described in lore as kind, fair, and gentle, with a capricious side she occasionally lets out, contrasting with her steel-willed sister.

Her sacred colours are evergreen and white, calling to mind the green leaves of the ivy plant during winter tide.

Her sacred animal is the elk, and she is usually pictured with one at her side. During winter, if a dragon should find the hoofprints of an elk in the snow, they can be sure that Ivy is walking alongside them.
