Unfathomably eloquent and coherent when writing, yet stumbling on her words when speaking due to hours (sometimes actual months) spent in silence, it's understandable that Viessi would prefer to simply not speak at all if she can avoid it. It is simply much MUCH more easy for her to string her thoughts together as ink on a page than use spoken words, because that implies she has to worry about her intonation, body language, pronunciation... It's a hassle, and Viessi just can't be bothered.

Many think her to be mute, but those that have heard her talk can attest to the opposite- Viessi just doesn't want to talk and it's a choice the rest of her clan have learned to respect. In fact, if you write back to her when communicating, Viessi will light up with glee and occasionally let out little chirps when writing to you in correspondence.

Another quite interesting quirk about Viessi is the fact that her feathers, unlike most coatls, have an almost paper-like texture and quality to them, but unlike paper, when wet, the ink she applies to her body does not run and wash away. It is magically adhered to her body, and therefore more like a tattoo that only she can remove if she so wishes.
