Abyss

Once an apprentice to the high king's fortune teller, Abyss learned he had been blessed with the gift of prophecy. Believing it his destiny to rule, the young pearlcatcher hungered for power. Hoping to prevent his ascension, his mentor drove him away, hoping some unfortunate fate would befall her failed apprentice. But fate had other, far grander plans for the dragon.

Years passed, and eventually, Abyss wormed his way into the court of another king. He offered his skills and with his guidance, the kingdom prospered. Yet the need for more gnawed at the oracle's heart, and one day, the king disappeared. No one knows where he went. There are rumors, of course, but no evidence. No sign that the ruler of the once-great kingdom ever existed. Soon after, it was announced that the heir would be, not the vanished monarch's child, but the court prophet.

Many hate the loathsome soothsayer, yet none have the courage to challenge him. They fear the wrath of the gods, since, as twisted as it may be, it seems Abyss still holds their favor. Perhaps there will come a time when someone will kill the mad prophet. Many have tried, and all have met a hero's end.



The pearl Abyss carries with him is the source of his magic. It is an ancient thing, and some speculate not even the pearlcatcher himself knows the full extent of its power.

The prophet's nameless familiar is a statue brought to life through some old arcane trickery. It obeys only the demented pearlcatcher and although made of stone, its spear is wickedly sharp. Many wannabe heroes have been killed by this familiar. No one knows how or why the statue exists, as Abyss isn't known to have any magic besides prophecy.
