Voided Crows
The eggs that had come in earlier that night sat on Devastation's desk, as she paced the room. They were carefully placed on pillows, the usual plain deep red of the shells interrupted by swirls of black that seemed to dance across the eggs, constantly shifting in the light.
"Do we know who delivered them?"
"No, ma'am. They just...appeared at our door. No one caught the dragon who dropped them off."
Devastation took a deep breath, and rubbed her eyes with her claws.
"Devi, dearest." Chamomile spoke up from where she rested on the bed, picking herself up to put a paw on Devastation's back. "They're children."
"I know, but they could raise a danger to-"
"They're children. We can raise them separately from the others if we must, but you know how cruel the world can be."
"You're right, Cham - of course, you're right." Devastation turned to the Lesser scout who'd been shifting his weight between his feet.
"Prepare the room next to mine for the children. We'll raise them there."
The scout nodded, dipping his head in respect and hurrying out of the room.
"I just hope this isn't a mistake." Devastation sighed, putting her head on Chamomile's shoulder.
Children born of void and plague, no one knows quite who brought the voided Crows to the Painted Wings. The voided crows seem to be your average Crow from a distance, but their eyes and shifting, dark runes betray their origins - and if you're unfortunate enough to be their enemy, you'll find yourself not only at the mercy of their viral strain and Crow cunning, but the powers they've gained from their origins, as well.
As with all Painted Wings children, they are given a choice once they grow to adulthood - stay with their family, or leave the nest and strike out to find their own place in the world.
