Biography

"a random scry will make you cry"

gildie aprli fools scry
#2444652

very powerful shadow mage, loves to dance
shade's ruin!
often pushes too hard, whether it's with her trainees or teammates or anyone
ambitious

Gildie threw herself into everything she did with a passion that surprised everyone except herself. There was no such thing as a casual hobby for her- she honed her interest with a single-minded focus on one thing at a time, then mastered it and moved on.

She was a perfectionist by nature, and sometimes too determined for her own good, but more importantly she was blazingly ambitious. The sky was the limit for most dragons, but Gildie would create her own oxygen tank just to get a little higher. She set goals-learn this spell, practice this move, do this job- and reached them, then set more. Nothing was ever enough for her. Higher and higher, closer to the sun, ignoring her mother's warnings.

It was like her brain moved twice as fast as her brother's. A never-ending whirlwind of thoughts, with one steady current- how can I improve-learn-achieve this?

Only when she was dancing did the never-ending current still. She lost herself in the music, heartbeat echoing the drums, letting everything blur together until there was just movement, kinetic and mesmerizing. She felt more grounded than she ever had before.

Dance was the first thing she was ever truly interested in. As a hatchling, she would sneak away from her mother to watch the dancers perform in the square, clumsily mimicking their every move. Indi enrolled her in training with one of the best dancers the Wispwillow Grove had to offer, and Gildie followed her mentor's every instruction down to the letter.

Next it was charisma. Gildie was funny, sure, but if she wanted to go places she needed to know how to charm the dragons around her. She learned how to set her body language so she radiated confidence, she learned how to smile and laugh just so, she learned how to be likable and lovable and powerful. Eventually, the confidence became second nature, a part of her just like her wings and claws were. It was an unbreakable shield against any insult thrown her way, her first line of defense against anything.

It wasn't manipulation (she was pretty sure, anyways), simply... adjusting what parts of her she displayed depending on who she was interacting with. Lima had once described dragons as jewels, with different facets showing at different times, and she'd taken it to heart.

Then she decided to become a mage. She took stacks upon stacks of books from libraries all across the Tangled Wood, she meditated at auspicious times in places of power, she sparred against her brother and against her dance instructor and against her own shadow. Her brother was more likely to tackle her and wrestle her into submission, and her instructor would stop her in front of a really cool dance/battle move to inform her that she wasn't in the proper position for a specific kind of turn that she wasn't doing, but fighting herself. Constantly pushing her own limits, unable to get an edge despite how hard she tried.

She learned how to incapacitate an enemy without killing them, how to channel magic through normal weapons, how to shield herself from danger. She formed the smallest threads of Shadow magic and she utterly incinerated clearings in one blast. She combined dance with magic, art with war, and she began to add flourishes to her blows. She waited back a moment when her sparring partner was down, when she could have ended the math, so they could rise again and the dance could begin anew.

Gildie was training one day when a dragoness came out of the forest and changed her life forever.
Quote:
So Gildie joined the group shortly after Wraith did- I think they probably spent a while in the Tangled Wood before deciding to move on, as the overall lore starts with Belladonna (raised in Plague) meeting my random progen (raised in Lightning) and them slowly traveling across Sornieth, collecting dragons as they go. I think she and Bell ran into each other and Gildie decided she had nothing better to do than travel with them a bit, and then she eventually decided to stay with them?
She was always an incredibly ambitious dragon, whether it was for dance or magic or (eventually) fighting. Because she pushes herself so hard, she kinda.. assumes everyone else does, too? She can definitely recognize her own limits, but it's harder for her to differentiate between others' "i'm being pushed but i'm learning" and "i'm seconds away from collapsing", and she can come off as uncaring if she thinks her trainees can do more.
Even so, the other members of the triumvirate (gov/council of three- Belladonna, Wraith, and Gildie) don't exactly agree with her stance on violence and fighting. It's not that they shy away from conflict- quite the opposite, actually- but Gildie's never been through the same struggles that Wraith (assassin) and Belladonna (plague-raised, Shade-touched, and struggling w/ pack-madness) have. So she ends up taking it a bit less seriously? Like, she has a moral compass (skewed as it is), and she doesn't enjoy hurting others. But she's theatric, always has been, and just kinda.. views fighting as another activity to master. There's a joy/satisfaction when she executes a perfect turn or casts the right spell, and she gets that same feeling when a blow lands. For two dragons who've had to fight to survive and wouldn't wish their pasts on their worst enemies, it's.. a bit jarring.
Quote:
Out of the triumvirate (the three main leaders- Belladonna, Gildie, and Wraith), she's the least traumatized by far, and the one who views violence distinctly differently than the rest. For Wraith, it's associated with fear and his automatic 'if I lose this fight my opponent will kill me', which is what kept him alive previously. And for Belladonna, she needs to fight but it's hard to keep her instincts (Mirror savagery, the effects of being exposed to the Shade from a young age, that sort of thing) from taking over. But apart from life-or-death battles, Gildie views fighting as just another activity to master. She enjoys it as long as she's not getting badly hurt, which the other two definitely have thoughts (lectures about ruthlessness and the value of life come to mind) about.

(response to a hatchling letter from Gamoratoad)

Hello Gildie!

It has been a while since we've spoken! I'm very glad to hear you're doing well and that you've settled into your new Clan, they sound like a great bunch to live with. And I'm so happy for you and Wraith, and the wonderful daughters you've raised together!

You were a bit feisty as a hatchling, so I'm not surprised to hear you've become a great fighter! I don't have much personal experience in that field, but I've seen the melee-focused fighters in my Clan have great success with a technique they call "eliminate," while the magically-inclined ones provide heals and other support. Whichever path you take, I'm sure you'll do well.

Your Dad says hello, and is also glad to hear that you're happy and well. Like you, many of your siblings have chosen to move on, and currently serve other clans and deities. Lima, who hatched alongside you, is now with the Windsinger!

Thank you for the letter, it was so nice to hear from you. I hope you continue to have fun and success with your new clanmates. Please say hello to Wraith and the children for me!

Lots of love,
Mom

P.S. - I'm sending some snacks for you and the family. I remember you liked these a lot as a hatchling, hopefully you still find them tasty!

Gildie awoke slowly.

Sunlight filtered through the gaps in her well-worn curtains, scattering rays across the ceiling and bathing her room in a soft, almost rosy light. Judging by the shadows, it was past sunrise- she was usually awake by now, planning patrols and gathering parties.

She shifted, then froze when her feathers brushed against cool scales. Wraith was curled next to her, unmasked as he was more often these days- at least around her. It came back to her then- they'd stayed up late talking, the conversation shifting from their Clanmates

"Elskling," he murmured. She had no idea what it meant, but his tone was soft in a way that only she got to hear.

His accent was always more pronounced when he was tired. When she'd met him, he hadn't seemed to have any accent at all- it took her a bit to realize that his mimicry applied to how he spoke as well. He tried suppressing it and matching the dialect of whoever he was talking with, but sometimes it was thicker- when he'd been talking with another Iceborn dragon for a while, when he was angry or drunk, when he was tired. He stressed his first syllable, used sharper sounds and consonants, paced his syllables in a different way than she was used to. Gildie found it utterly endearing- then again, she found most things he did utterly endearing. Her own accent was a mess, a mix of different Wood dialects and phrases she'd picked up over her travels, but his was as soft and sharp as frost.
