"If you listen carefully on winter nights, you can hear them calling your name."

A creature of many names. A tall skeletal beast wanders the woods. Silent like shadows as it hunts. The dead of winter in isolation is a death sentence. You’re not alone...never alone in this isolation. You are being hunted.

This is the tale of the Barghest, Wendigo.

The family decided to travel up through the mountains to relocate the clan after they were raided by bandits and child eaters. It was the only way. There was rumors of a family who knew how to protect clan’s from the dark witches and so his family decided it was time to go there.

They packed all their belongings and started their trek. Before they came to the ridge, they encountered an older female alone on the trail. It was getting dark so the father invited the elder to join them for a small dinner. She told them of an avalanche that blocked their original path. This was troubling and the elder didn’t look right. Something about her gaze didn’t feel right with the hatchlings. Father tried to figure out what to do when the Elder suggested a different path; a shorter one and safe for the younglings. This was exciting for the adults. When the sun rose, they thanked the Elder before venturing toward her recommended path. The youngest hatchling turned back and wished he didn’t. Her face changed darker, her warm smile turned sinister. It was the face of death. She had to be one of the witches and she had sent them to their doom and yet no one listened to him.

The weather turned south. A whiteout blizzard raged as they took cover within their tents. Food ran out a week ago. They had resorted to killing their large pack animals. The clan was in trouble. Despite the storm, there was an unearthly silence. There was no laughter, no life, no hope. Father tried to venture for help but he’s been gone for days. Another male had died in his sleep and his family buried him in a shallow snow grave. When father returned, three more had perished and dire actions were to be needed. Eyes looked towards the corpses.

Meat was cooking. The hatchlings were excited. Finally food! Father must have had a successful hunt. Only, this meat tasted different but they are no longer hungry. The adults couldn’t look at them.

A couple more party members had disappeared to try to find help but they never returned and the first hatchling died. The youngest couldn’t help but wonder if there’s something in the storm. When the blizzard calmed, it didn’t bring comfort. There was a heavy silence. More strange meat was cooked and more clan members either died or left, but when only the lead family was left was when another tragedy occurred.

Something was hunting. There was a silent presence that seemed to stay in the shadows. It first took their mother before picking the hatchlings one by one. The youngest knew he was the last before his father and yet his time never came. It took his father first. Alone, he had to decide whether he should face the mountain alone or face his doom like his family. An unknown strength fills him and decided to run. Hopefully he’ll be able to find some actual help. Better to die trying rather than waiting for Death.

He knew it would be difficult. He knew he was being hunted. Whatever got his family is after him no. It was silent, it was like the bitter cold wind was its breath, the forest branches are its fingers. One night he found shelter within an old log and he saw the Elder female walk towards him but she quickly disappeared. He couldn’t sleep after that. Everywhere he looked, he saw her. Then he collapsed. He couldn’t move anymore. Hungry was insatiable, snow was his water but that wasn’t enough. He was too weak to even try to catch anything let alone try to find proper shelter.

When night approached she was there in the shadows. No longer in her elder guise, she was beautiful. Evil radiated from her. She never made a sound when she came to his body. He wanted to run; he was so scared. He had heard the adults whisper of an evil beast of ice. When she grabbed him, her hands were so cold that they burned his skin. There were howls in the distance. She seemed to pause her actions for a mere moment before locking eyes with him. Her toothy gaze glazed with madness.

Pain erupted his body as her teeth pierced his shoulder and neck. He could feel the bones snap under the pressure already weakened by starvation. Her mouth was torn from his body when she was tackled from him. He say blurred of pale blue furs but in his state he collapsed.

He awoke in the dead of night. He felt stronger than ever before and yet his body looks as if he has never eaten. He found himself surrounded by ritualistic items and a lone wolf beast sitting at the edge of the clearing he was in. The moonbeast frowned but without a word, left him alone.

Overtime; those who wander the mountains and the forest find themselves being hunted by a silent hunter. A towering hunter forever starved and trying to satisfy hunger. Sometimes if you listen quietly, you can hear it calling you. Mimicking familiar voices to lure you closer.
