Gemma and Jasper never claimed to make their living honestly, and they certainly never strove to teach their children any better. The cracked and arid Shattered Plain is a harsh and unforgiving place to live, and so hatchlings learn how to be of use before they’re dropped as deadweight.

Cheats and swindlers, cons and sneak thieves, these children learn how to manage on their own. Even those few who choose to follow the straight and narrow are fiercely independent, troubled over the idea of owing a favor to another. No matter what profession they end up in, their ready wit and unique morals will always mark them as their mothers’ children.

As a child, Jessamine delighted in making the kind of juvenile concoction that many a young drake invents - full of twigs, pebbles, and the smelliest, stickiest mud that could be found. Most dragons grow out of this passing fancy, but Jessamine’s just refined her craft. Most of her brews are palatable to the adult nowadays, and for those in her arsenal that are less than scrumptious? Well, she learned how to creatively convince at her mothers’ knees, and the addition of a little empathy to reveal the fears of the crowd means that her medleys always sell out. Do they do what she claims? Of course not. Doesn’t stop her from selling Madame Malarkey’s Mire Chestnut Mixture to anyone who’ll stop and listen.
