Gemma and Jasper never claimed to make their living honestly, and they certainly never strove to teach their children any better. The cracked and arid Shattered Plain is a harsh and unforgiving place to live, and so hatchlings learn how to be of use before they’re dropped as deadweight.

Cheats and swindlers, cons and sneak thieves, these children learn how to manage on their own. Even those few who choose to follow the straight and narrow are fiercely independent, troubled over the idea of owing a favor to another. No matter what profession they end up in, their ready wit and unique morals will always mark them as their mothers’ children.

Althea is Gemma and Jasper’s first-born, but in their opinion, she does very little to uphold the family values. She’s too honest, too straight-laced, too caring. They’re immensely unimpressed with her, but she cut ties and left their caravan as early as she could, so she doesn’t particularly care. She remembers being a wide-eyed witness to her parents preference for a slit throat over a snitch. It’s easier to scrub butcher’s fig juice out of white linen than it is to scrub the memory of red blood pooling in moonlit sand. Her travels take her far and wide, and there’s always another dragon that could use a few neat stitches and brusque words to tide them through the night.
