"Virescens stares through the midday heat, watching it ripple the horizon like a banner. He and his sister were utterly alone. It was a fool's errand, and only Vire knew it. They were a nuisance to Lanii, sent to pick scraps in the dunes. Pyrh still dug through the sands, hoping that if she just found something worthwhile, Lanii might treat her better. Vire hardly bothered. He'd tried in the past, and for what? There was no getting what Avocet had, not unless he were born again with different wings."

The firstborn of Laniisoma and Etna should have been a treasured child- and he was, but only to Etna. She loved all of them, even if her relationship with Lanii was only political. Etna was ever-busy, though. There were days when she didn't sleep, between running the clan and poring over ancient scripts from the tunnels. That left them with Lanii. He was a doting father, but only to Avocet. Only to the Effluvial child- the youngest, the golden one. Vire and Pyrh had to fend for themselves, most of the time.

Many days started with Lanii taking Avocet to train and see new sights. Vire was left in the camp to learn on his own, and to pass the time. If they were lucky, they might be sent scavenging. It was no surprise that Vire became a bitter dragon and went searching for something more.
