Biography

Neon

64524991.png

Uh-oh, looks like this energetic Spiral wandered a little too far from its home lair (DustyAndDespair, #548249), and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return it to its home lair, to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here, or to the rest hub if you don't want another traveller in return. Please refrain from exalting her!

"Why stay here, when there's a whole world to explore?"

A curious and young creature, this dragonette knows little of herself. Alchemy can be a wonderful thing, and Neon is living proof of this as an alchemy experiment gone wrong, life unintentionally created from an unstable chemical mixture. Little does she realize the harm she causes to everything around her. Friends have grown sick, animals prefer to stay away, and even the delicate flowers she loves so dearly wilt and brown in her presence. She walks like any other, talks like any other, and her heart is sweet enough to cause cavities, and yet her mere presence brings harm to all...

DustyAndDespair

The dragonette took one good, long, last look at her home, tears welling in her eyes as it wiped them away with a single claw.

An older Imperial came in to greet the bright-colored Spiral, an uncomfortable look plastered on her face. “You know you’re always welcome back here, right?” Strawberry inquired, already looking a bit sickly from her days of helping the young Spiral pack its belongings.

Neon smiled widely at her. “Of course I know that! This is home after all, I can’t see why I wouldn’t ever be welcome back.” It said happily, the hooked tip of its tail now wagging with excitement.

Strawberry sighed, and with a little reluctance, rubbed the Spiral's head affectionately. “Good. You better be careful out there, you never know what scary things this big world may hold...” the Imperial warned Neon, her voice weak and more than a little strained. She leaned in to nuzzle the Spiral gently, and pulled her in then for a great hug.

As Neon stood at the edge of the Tangled Woods it had always called home, as far back as it could really remember, she looked back one final time to Strawberry to flash her a smile. The retired traveller was visibly exhausted, and almost older-looking now than when she had first offered to help Neon, but she was still smiling brightly back at the Spiral all the same.

“I’m gonna miss you Berry, thank you so much for helping me with this. I promise I’ll come back someday, don’t you worry!” It called to her with a grin like no other, before finally taking off from the home she had grown to know and love. Away from all it loved, to set out on a new adventure. To find greater things.

Strawberry continued her weak waving until the Spiral was well out of sight, smiling faintly as she trekked back inside their lair and went to visit the nest the Spiral had once inhabited. Her smile faded to a grimace, though, as she beheld all of the dead plants scattered about the room, and she gently scooped up one of the fragile, shrivelled leaves in one of her talons to inspect it. The leaf stayed composed for a mere few seconds before it crumbled to brown dust.

“Oh, you poor thing...” she said with a sad sigh, looking back at the entrance from which the Spiral had just departed minutes before. “You don’t realize any of the harm you bring with you...”

Strawberry resigned herself for the night then, a weak cough escaping her maw as she plodded to bed. She huddled close to the warm scales of her mate...

She laid there for hours without sleep, feverish and restless, rethinking her choice to help the Spiral. A heavy guilt began boring into the Imperial the more she mulled it over, and something finally clicked into place with her ill mind as she lifted her head with a jolt.

“What have I done...?”

The words of wisdom that the retired traveller had shared with Neon echoed through its head once again. 'Be careful out there...' the Spiral recalled, her snout crinkling with acidic tears that threatened to spill, 'you never know what scary things this big world may hold...'

The Imperial was right. The world outside the Tangled Wood was so scary, so unlike anything Neon could have ever expected -- scarier than anything it had ever known, at least in her short life so far. How did it ever come to this? Well...

The Spiral had been barely a wingbeat over the border between the Shadowbinder's domain and the Sunbeam Ruins when it was approached by a strange, sly Skydancer alchemist, with a sneaky demeanour to her. She fumbled with a strange piece of machinery in her claws... something that was sounding an alarm.

"Hello, traveller!" Tango greeted the Spiral as innocently as she could, though an undeniable look of morbid intrigue glinted in her ruby red eyes. "So terribly sorry to bother you, but this scanner I've been using to test the potential of my recent brews went haywire a moment ago, and when I followed its signal, it led me straight to you! It's telling me that it's picking up traces of radioactivity from right where you're standing... would you happen to know what that's all about?"

Neon cocked her head to the side in confusion, so much so that it nearly flipped all the way around. "Sorry to say, ma'am, but I don't think I can help!" It apologized, "I don't have a bit of a clue what that would be all about."

Tango stared down hard at the Neon, watching as swaths of grass surrounding them both curled over, browned, and crumbled to dust in the unnatural Spiral's presence. Cogs in her head were turning. "Well," she started, "there has to be something linking you to the brews that I've been working on lately, or my scanner wouldn't have reacted the way it did. Is there any way you'd be willing to come with me to my lab for a bit, so I could run some quick tests? I won't detour you for long, I just want to know what this is all about."

Neon tapped its chin thoughtfully for a moment. She remembered Strawberry's warning from before, but she couldn't help in thinking how this would be a great opportunity to make a new friend, and so soon into its travels, too! "Sure thing, lady!" The Spiral squawked in all its naivety. "I'd be happy to come along for a bit, um... what was your name again?"

"Tango. My name is Tango," the Skydancer answered in a somewhat hushed tone.

...

It wasn't too long after the two dragons had entered Tango's "laboratory," which was really just a shady little underground den hosting crammed shelves of alchemy reagents and a rancid-smelling, burbling cauldron in its center, that the Skydancer asked Neon if she could go into a little side-room really quick to retrieve some tools for the tests. The Spiral eagerly agreed, and fluttered into the side room to start looking, before it realized that it didn't even know what kind of tools the alchemist needed. Neon turned back to ask Tango just that, only to find that the Skydancer had closed the side-room up with an iron gate, and was now locking it with a silver key!

"H-hey! What the heck do you think you're doing?!" Neon burst out, her voice quivering at this sudden betrayal.

But Tango bore her no mind. "I can't believe that some other alchemist beat me to my magnum opus," the Skydancer hissed, her voice dripping with vitriol, "I know Baldwin has succeeded in making dragon eggs through his cauldron before, but I was going to be the first to produce a fully-formed dragon with alchemy! I refuse to believe some half-baked scientist beat me to it.

"Now listen here, you little worm," the alchemist snarled at Neon, making the Spiral shrink in on herself, "I need to haul tail to the Trading Post before it closes to get some reagents for my tests. I'm going to figure out exactly what it is that makes you tick, even if it means I have to strap you to that table and vivisect you myself. Tango will be the first alchemist to create a living, breathing dragon from a chemical mixture, and if someone managed to beat me to it, well... I'll just hide the evidence and take all the damn credit for myself anyways."

The Skydancer spun on her heels then, and turned to leave the underground hideout. Neon struggled to hold in its sobs. "Why... why are you doing this?" She whimpered. "I thought we could have been friends...?"

"I don't make friends," Tango stated simply. " I make progress. Now I want not another sound out of you, and if you bring any attention to yourself there's gonna be a world of hurt, got it? I don't want to hear anything louder than a Fae's sneeze come out of this lab."

The Skydancer left the den before Neon could even respond, and the Spiral finally let itself break down into quiet, muffled sobs.

...

After what felt like an eternity, Neon's sobs had finally quieted down to just the occasional sniffle. Tango had been gone for some time now, and all the Spiral had for company now was the foul smell of the lab, the silent burbling of the cauldron, and its own despairing thoughts of Strawberry -- seemingly her only friend in the world.

To Neon's dismay, her ears then picked up to the sound of movement coming from the entrance. 'Oh somebody help me,' the Spiral thought desperately, 'Tango can't be back yet, she can't be!' But it was as if the Lightweaver herself had heard its prayers, because the dragons that barged into the den were thankfully not the Skydancer, no -- but a pair of older Bogsneaks, that looked around the place with visible disgust.

Their eyes fell from the shelves of reagents, to the stomach-turning cauldron, and finally to Neon's makeshift prison. The larger Bogsneak of the two, the female, cried out as she made eye contact with the little Spiral, and she rushed over to fiddle with the gate's lock. She glanced around for the key for a moment, before seemingly deciding it wasn't worth the effort, and she simply smashed the lock open with her club-like tail instead.

Neon slunk its way out of the room, looking up graciously at her saviours. "Who are you?" It asked, heart brimming with newfound admiration for the two Bogsneaks. "Why did you save me?"

The smaller, male Bogsneak stepped forward to gently pat Neon's head with a mighty paw. "We saw you when you first entered the Sunbeam Ruins, and that Skydancer, well... she's unfortunately a member of our own clan. She's always given us the creeps, so when we saw her lead you away, we thought it would be best to follow."

The female voiced her agreement. "Turns out we were right about her, too -- though we never would have thought she was capable of this much. We just happened to be in the right place at the right time," she smiled thankfully. "We're just so glad you're safe and sound, dear."

The male Bogsneak patted Neon on its back then, ushering it to go. "Quick though, you need to get out of here!" He hurried her. "Tango could be back at any time now!"

Neon nodded thankfully to her saviours one last time, before it took off from the den and flew off spiralling into the sky, aiming somewhere far away from here.

...

SLURMP watched until the radioactive Spiral was but a speck in the distance. "Of course, that wasn't the only reason..." she admitted quietly to herself and her mate, tears welling in her eyes.

"You saw the path of dead grass that she left too, then?" Amaretto asked her, his own voice beginning to quiver. "Admittedly, I didn't want to say anything, but...

"That Spiral reminded me of her, too."

"I'm still so sorry I let Tango and Adonis get to me like that," SLURMP despaired as quiet as she could, "to convince us to exile our own sick daughter from the clan, I -- I can't believe I was capable of something so heinous. Even if she did have to leave, to find a cure... there was no reason I couldn't have gone with her."

"It isn't just your fault," Amaretto reassured her, "I'm just as guilty as you. I didn't fight back against them either."

"I just... seeing the way that Spiral poisoned the land it inhabited like that, it... it made me think of her. I just felt like, if we helped her escape, it might bring me just a little closer to redeeming myself for what I did to our baby."

"I know," Amaretto sighed, his voice wavering, lowering his head as his own blind eyes became watery with tears. "I... I feel the same."
