Biography

Botany has always been interested in medicine, as a hatchling she would sneak her way into the medicine den and secretly watch the healers as they worked, from on a high shelf. By watching from her perch, she learned each and every herb by name and what/how they were used... until the Healers found out. One day a patient came into the den when there were no Healers about.

"Hello?" He asked, "is anyone here? I need your help, my mate is egg bound."

The dragon burst into tears. Botany felt terrible. She had to do something. Botany scampered to the storage nook and grabbed a handful of herbs. She started chewing some up and putting them in a small bowl to mix them together. Once she had finished that she grabbed a couple more leaves and scampered back out to the dragon.

"Here," she said, "feed her these herbs and rub this on her stomach. It should help."

The male dragon looked up surprised, then astounded.

"What? Y-y-you're j-just a hatchling!" He cried, "What do you know about medicine?"

"I'm in here every day watching, but you must be quick to help your mate. If you don't go... I will." Botany replied.

Just then a group of Healers came in. The oldest saw Botany giving the despairing dragon the herbs.

"What are you doing?!" She exclaimed.

"This dragon's mate is egg bound." Botany said standing tall, "You guys weren't here, I had to help"

One of the younger Healers went to the storage nook and started mixing herbs together into a poultice. Then he grabbed some more leaves and brought them to the mate of the egg-bound.

"Here," the young Healer said, "feed her these herbs and rub this on her stomach. It should help."

"THANK YOU!!!" The older male said, "I don't know what I would do without you." The dragon ran out the door towards the nursery.

"This is no place for a youngling like you. You must leave this den immediately who knows what you put in that poultice! You could have made it worse instead of better!" The old Healer lectured, "I'm requesting the Medicine den to be moved."

"Wait!" This was one of the younger Healers who had just finished her apprenticeship. "These herbs are the right ones, and this poultice is better mixed than mine have ever been. She gave the right thing."

"What?" The old Healer was perplexed. She walked over to the herbs to sniff and prod at them. "Pure luck."

"No, I've been in here every day since I was hatched sitting on that shelf that never gets used. I've been watching you mix and prescribe and heal since before I could growl. I know each herb by name and I know every cure that has been documented, I also have a few ideas about how to cure what you have been unable to. Please don't expel me. I just want to help. I just want to learn." The old Healer faltered a little bit then stood taller.

"You are still a hatchling. Hatchlings don't belong in the Medicine Den." she said.

The Medicine Den was relocated to a cliff inaccessible to hatchlings and non flying dragons. It so happened that Botany saved the old Healers life a few months later, she was then was accepted as an apprentice to the young female who had first noticed how good she was. She quickly passed apprenticeship and went on to become the youngest healer the clan had ever seen.
