In a rocky corner of this icy lair, where dragons' body heat has worn away the snow to reveal a blossoming tundra, a secret garden can be found. The queen of this garden, Chalcedony, and her offspring resemble rocks both in patterning and in temperament. Like most snappers they seek to accumulate wisdom throughout their lives, but unlike most snappers, they rarely travel beyond their homes, and when they do they tend to put down permanent roots. They trade breadth of knowledge for depth, often absorbing themselves in a chosen field of study for years or decades on end. A Geode may not seem like an especially lively addition to your lair, but engage them in conversation on their pet subjects and they'll show you why they're known as Geodes: their rocky exterior opens up to reveal a glittering wealth of knowledge, akin to any dragon's treasure hoard. For the most part, though, they need little attention, and are quiet to the point that most dragons won't even know they're there. If a Geode is forced to leave their lair abruptly, they will become anxious and stressed, and may even get aggressive; though it is a rare sight in these largely peaceful creatures, like all dragons they are capable of violence. On adopting a Geode, you agree that if they are exalted or transferred, it should fit their story. |

geode colours and temperaments
No two Geodes are born with like colours. Though of course all are individuals, the broad nature of a Geode is determined partly by its colour. Chalcedony divines the nature of all Geodes. Thus, you don't have to figure out what nature a Geode belongs to; it will be listed with their profile. Geodes will have a lineage that traces back to a pair in this lair (cobaltdrgn#539047) Earth-Toned Geodes, those in shades of brown, yellow and grey, are also known as Jasper Geodes. These dragons have a generous nature and enjoy working with plants, minerals and metals, which they often combine into potions for injured dragons, or to heal the land. Earth-Toned Geodes frequently take up alchemy while in their birth lair, and can become very skilled at it. If you have other young Geodes, it's wise to keep a Jasper Geode around, as their presence exerts a stabilising calm on the hatchlings. Green Geodes, also known as Chrysocolla Geodes, are particularly suited to plant magic. Even the hardest, most frozen or plague-tinged ground can become a blossoming meadow when tended by a Chrysocolla. They are sought after by Ice lairs for exactly this reason: they can contribute greatly to a lair's food supply. They are often befriended by plant familiars, and are most comfortable lairing in areas where they are allowed to grow plants to their heart's content. Blue Geodes, also known as Agate Geodes, tend towards water magic. In an Ice lair, these dragons may be found at the very edge of a floe, where the ice has mysteriously melted and given way to a thriving colony of kelp and fish. In other places, they will gravitate towards whatever water is available; and of course they love Water lairs. They have an unbounded interest in the denizens of the deep, and will often tame frightening sea monsters as familiars, to the consternation of the rest of the clan. However, if a heavy storm comes in and other lairs are flooded with slushy rime, while your lair remains untouched, an Agate Geode may be to thank! Purple Geodes, or Amethyst Geodes, are the most studious of the clan... which is saying something, given how Geodes are. A Geode whose dominant colour is in the indigo-violet-lavender range will often be passionately focused on their field of study, usually a magical one, to the exclusion of all else. More worldly dragons may have to remind these devoted dragons to eat and sleep. However, due to their dedication, their spells can be some of the most powerful of all dragons. Pink Geodes, or Rose Geodes, are exceedingly rare. A Geode in the pink range is considered a blessing to the lair they live within, for they exhibit equal levels of protective and healing power. Unlike most Geodes, a Rose Geode will spill blood in defense of their lair, while healing any who fight alongside them. With time, they will befriend any breed of dragon; however, these rare defenders will often only go to lairs where other Geodes already live. Red Geodes, or Carnelian Geodes, are rare Geodes who hearken to the flows of molten earth. These dragons frequently seek out lairs in other realms than Ice, so that they may hone their understanding of the secrets carried on the Flamecaller's breath. Some Geodes hold negative stereotypes about Carnelians; they're thought to be more aggressive than the rest, but that's more an artifact of their being born into a lair that doesn't match their nature. A Carnelian Geode living in a warm clime will typically be a peaceable creature. Orange Geodes, or Tiger Geodes, balance personal passion with a garrulous social nature that is uncommon among Geodes. Tigers, much more than other Geodes, will happily talk your earhole off about their projects, the weather, or whatever comes to mind. Often the hyperactive nature of a Tiger will settle if they have ample freedom to pursue their passions and discuss them with likeminded individuals. Dark or Obsidian Geodes, those with colouring nearing black, are considered to have "metamorphic wisdom"; that is, they are dark because they are old souls compressed by time into grand jewels, who contain multitudes. It's true that these dragons are often particularly prescient as hatchlings, but some do feel overwhelmed by the pressure to be superior. They may have any nature, and will be strongly dedicated to it. Pale Geodes, those with unusually light colouring, usually follow the nature of their dominant colouration: for example, a pale yellow Geode will be considered a Jasper. If the Geode is firmly within the white spectrum, it will be considered a Quartz Geode. Quartzes may have any nature, and may flit between natures over time. Mixed Geodes are those who cannot truly be described as any one colour, or who have no dominant colour. They generally take on the nature of their parent colours (for example, a Nightshade prim/Orchid second may have elements of Purple, Blue and Green), though you're free to have your dragon go against the grain, especially with these ones. A Mixed Geode may well experience a lot of confusion about their place in life. They may have plural identities. |
