AQUILUS
DRAKON OF THE ORACLE
The Tidelord was not the only being of water
to emerge in creation...

Smaller, much less powerful spirits winked into existence during His battle with the Windsinger, springing up from cresting waves and torrents of rain. These ethereal creatures were not intended to have intelligence, yet they did, and they were new to the world and yearned for the same things their creator did: to destroy His enemies. At the time, His only enemy was the Windsinger, though it was not long before their battle was interrupted by the emergence of the Stormcatcher. They aided Him in the battle against the Shade, and watched as He joined the other Seven in the Pillar. They roamed the broken world through the Second and Third Ages unaided by their deity. The spirits took the form of Second Age peoples and gathered information for their master. They named themselves: Tide, Steam, Ocean, Droplet, Whirlpool, Rain, Fluid, and countless more. The wiser beings gave themselves names for the ideas He stood for: Fluidity, Mystery, Prophecy, Wisdom. They elected a leader, christening them Oracle.

After the Shattering, they were reunited with Him, and followed Him to the land of water. But He rejected them, His accidental creations. They were not worthy of protecting His Shard, too primal and fluid. He needed to make a new race of creature, one in His image, who were of the utmost perfection.

Dejected, the lesser spirits descended into the depths of the Spiral Keep and made a home for themselves there, an idea they had retained from the Second Age. Still smarting from their dismissal, the Oracle, as they were collectively known as, decided to try to prove to their master that they were worthy of being His guardians. From their essence, they molded new, permanent forms for themselves, physical bodies that they could use to protect Him. They varied in size and shape, but their purpose remained the same. Satisfied, each of the spirits took to the skies on the wings of the constructs they had created, filled with an innate feeling to call them drakon. They were made not of flesh and bone, but of all of Water: breath of Steam, eyes of Rain, blood of Fluid, heart of Tide. The drakon were the greatest creations the Tidelord had ever seen, they were sure.

They entered the chamber where the Tidelord had been building His new followers out of flowing water and magic. Upon seeing the drakon, He was filled with a fury the Oracle had not witnessed before, not even in the battle against the Windsinger millenia ago. He destroyed each of the drakon, reducing them to their ethereal forms once again. Their former master banished the Oracle, and the spirits were driven to the southwest, to a land most inhospitable to them: a land roiling with lava.

Suddenly, a great plume of smoke erupted from the largest volcano, and out spewed... other spirits. These were not the Tidelord's doing, however; that much was clear. These spirits were clearly made of the same matter below them; that is to say, there were of Fire. The fire deity, whose name the Oracle could barely recall: the Flamecaller.

The Flamecaller's spirits studied the Oracle with the same curiosity and apprehension. Assessing each other. Each realized, at nearly the same time, that they were not made to be comrades. One drawing near to another damaged them in a way they had not been hurt before. They were threats to each other.

And with all their intelligence, the spirits of Water and Fire abhorred threats.

The Oracle launched themselves at the Fire spirits, the sea below them roiling with steam and hot air. The lava sizzled at their backs where water droplets hit it. Each side weakened at the same pace, yet they refused to let it show, fighting with as much ferocity at full strength as near death.

Eventually, they realized that the war could not be won this way, so they retreated to their own domains and built new weapons. A better drakon, one not made to win over the Tidelord but to defeat their newly-discovered nemesis, the Forge. Instead of a construct made from their pure essence, however, this new drakon would be created as any other, with no more power than any of the Tidelord's children. The Oracle would model it after a child of Water, with as much knowledge of the world as any other dragon, and then transform into other constructs. Not drakon, but objects that would fill the drakon's mind and soul with clarity and knowledge, when it was worthy. This way, the Oracle would be able to slowly build up the drakon's strength, nurturing it into something much more powerful than a newborn like the first drakon.

They would be patient, lying in wait as artifacts of water for the drakon to eventually claim. When the Forge rose again, the Oracle would meet them. And this time, they would evaporate their greatest threat once and for all.
