Biography
■
durhan keeper of the beast |
It takes more than iron to imprison a true beast. Durhan knows all too well the costs of maintaining a prison fit for a god, what with his waking hours spent tending to the Beast. By all rights, it is not a role that the Order Radiant would deem righteous, and were they to discover his activities, the Luminaries would risk discipline, or dissolution.
But the Justices keep Durhan's work a secret, confined strictly to the bowels of Isle Heliodoros. The walls have no ears this deep within the earth, and prying eyes would be hard pressed to peer through the unnatural gloom of the place.
All this is by design. Once little more than a scholar, Durhan is now an active practitioner of more dubious arts. Years of poring over others' research in dusty library carrels has led to a wealth of theoretical knowledge waiting to be applied. And without the Order Radiant to supervise and inevitably interfere, Durhan has turned that knowledge into practical use, free from concerns of ethics or comparison.
His experiments, after all, are not meant to be recorded and tucked on a shelf until some future scholar seeks to disprove his hard work. Rather, they seek to contain the Beast and to siphon its power into more useful forms.
Few Luminaries know of the Beast's existence, believing it to have been slain at Araila's mighty hand. If they knew its myriad heads still drew breath, still spoke, there would be revolt and reckoning. Only the most curious among them would dare to imagine the benefits of preserving such a creature, teasing out its secrets until they may be gifted to the light.
Progress, Durhan finds, is not welcomed until it has already arrived. So be it. Though it consumes his every moment, he remains devoted to coaxing out the Beast's many secrets. There may be something useful yet in its fractured heads.
