Ivan

Ivan and his mate, Ivie, were researching a particular type of firefly they'd both had following them since as long as they could remember. No matter where they went they couldn’t seem to pinpoint the bugs’ origin though. It wasn’t just them either - dragons from all over had similar fireflies following them. Some even claimed they enhanced their elemental powers, but Ivan hadn’t seen enough research done to accept that conclusion. It wasn’t until their first nest hatched that they witnessed the truth.

They had noted the outside of their hatchlings’ eggs had small clusters of tiny bug eggs. When it was time for their eggs to hatch, tiny transparent bugs were hatching from the clusters as well. Both parents watched in fascination as the bugs crawled over to the hatchling. Then they panicked when they realized the bugs were mosquito-like and feasting on their firstborn.

Immediately the distraught parents squished the bug eggs before their other two children hatched and then turned their attention back to their first. The young obelisk was staring at a firefly that had landed on her nose. The firefly was a different color than the ones Ivan and Ivie were familiar with.

“Were those bugs firefly larva?” Ivan mused.

“Is transparency the reason we’ve never been able to discover their origins?” The hatching of their second child halted Ivie’s train of thought. Instead of fireflies surrounding the hatchling, he was covered in a stringy goo. The third child had a similar appearance.

“Is this our fault?” Ivie whispered in horror, trying to clean the muck off without much success. “If these fireflies share some sort of symbiotic relationship with us, then what will happen to them?”

Ivan just shook his head. All they could do was wait and see.

THE SMIRCH IS TEMPORARY! Swip just won't pop up w/ firefly ;^;
I added smirch so I could hatch a nest for New years... unscheduled FR maintenence caused me to be one day off.
Not only was their first nest hatched on the wrong day, but 2/3 got smirch ;-; fml
