No one knows what happened to Tropics as a hatchling, not even himself. At this point, it's assumed that before he hatched, he was orphaned, abandoned, or lost. For he grew up alone on an abandoned island somewhere between the Shifting Expanse and the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Due to being smack dab between the ocean and the land of storms, this island was covered in an enormous rain forest that saw downpour and thunder on most nights. He learned how to survive from the tropical birds that resided there in spades, and he adopted many of their mannerisms, and came to communicate through tweets and whistles. He spent days perched on branches, and slept each night curled up in the knot of a tree. He reached maturity amidst this rain forest, with the wildlife as his family.

He was introduced to civilization when the Rose Guard visited the island with the gatherers of the clan, to collect a hefty stock of plants for the resident snappers. At first, he was aggressive with the intruders, believing they were deforesting his home and the home of all the animals on this island. Communicating was difficult initially, but over the weeks, some of the Guard made regular visits to build good relations with the one they called "King of the Rain Forest." The one who visited most often was the guardian Tsunami, who he bonded closely with over the coming months.

Despite not living with the clan in Dragonhome or the Southern Icefield, instead choosing to remain on his island, he's considered a member of the clan, and receives regular letters from the messengers, which Tsunami helps him read.
