Tifil, upon finding a safe place to rest with his ragtag group of Gaoler children, went out to find more young Gaolers without a place to go. He found this strange bug and brought it home. He took the spacy hatchling to be traumatized in some fashion, but it did not occur to him that anything in particular was wrong until he met Honey, who has bug-like features but is markedly different than DRONE. The DRONE that was first brought home was....bad at being a dragon, to put it simply.
Much later the elder Goat arrived and told Tifil and the others of the shadowy unknown entity called the hive. She was deeply concerned. But one day this drone's eyes shifted. It stopped eating or leaving its room. Tifil insisted on feeding it daily, and conversing.
One day, it answered. It began to eat again.
Goat the elder seems to think it is not like the Drones she has heard of--indeed, it has not attempted to assimilate anyone at all, and seems likewise uninterested in the strange vial of liquid Tifil found with it, or perhaps almost afraid of it. The liquid remains in Goat's care.
Tifil insists that regardless of it being some kind of frightening cryptid, it is welcome in his home so long as it follows the rules. He has noted that DRONE uses it/its pronouns, even after its shift in attitude.

A child of the ancient Gaoler consciousnesses, Rime and Reason. They're purists at heart, and believe strongly in the sanctity of their own bloodline. Though the hivemind is more perfect than dragonkind, they still view any drones modeled after modern breeds to be inferior to those of their stock. To them, the idea that a modern-based drone could be just as good as or even better than an ancient-based drone is laughable, if not downright blasphemous.
Since there aren't exactly a lot of ancient-based consciousnesses frozen in ice or preserved in stasis pods, they've elected to have hatchlings of their own and send them across the world, so that their purity may reach even the farthest corners of the globe, and teach modern hivekind how things are really supposed to be done. This hatchling is part of that effort, a pure product of their lineage. They are proud to see it go out and achieve greatness. Whether or not it will live up to their expectations remains to be seen.
