Angering a witch is never a good idea.

It was a dark night, rain making flight impossible. He barely noticed, safe in his lair, a fire keeping him warm and dry. The crackling fire, the heat, the thunder, it all lulled him to sleep, dreaming of a peaceful tomorrow.

A harsh knocking woke him up. A stranger dragon stood on the other side, soaked to the bone. She begged to be let in for the night, until the rain lightened, until the sun came up. He wondered why she would be traveling in such awful weather; it had been cloudy for days and the storm was no surprise. He imagined the dangers of letting her into his lair, of waking up without food or treasure, of not waking up at all.

He was young and naive arrogant and rude, closing the door and going back to sleep.

The witch returned when the storm ended. He tried to close the door again, but she was stronger than he anticipated. And so, he was cursed to be a dragon no more, not until he suffered a thousand storms and felt the chill of a thousand blizzards. Sitting on a hatchling's shelf, safe from any damaging weather, he had no hope of breaking the curse.
