Biography

Tup's first memory was blurred, and yet she remembered it perfectly- like when you try to see something when you think, but it isn't there, not really. She was in the Wispwillow Grove, same as all the other Veilspun dragons. She remembered her adoptive mother telling her gently, "It was as if the Shadowbinder dropped you from the sky, my little darling!" and then she remembered that she had gone with the others through the forest on swift, small wings.

It wasn't until she was a bit older that two young dragons dared venture into the Wispwillow Grove, and they were quite composed the whole time, shockingly. According to Mother, dragons were always panicked and in fear when they realized that the legends were true- the Veilspun were indeed real.

She remembered those dragons clearly, unlike the oddly blurred first memory. Two dragons- a Guardian and a Fae. The Guardian was large and walked along with an extremely confident strut, and the Fae, who was quite lovely and had candles floating around her wings, fluttered in a dainty, sophisticated manner. The two seemed to be arguing about something, though Tup couldn't remember what. She did remember the names, however- the Guardian was called Flurry (of the Ice element, she had observed whilst she and her group followed them), and the Fae was called Cari (she was a Water dragon, which figured, as she had a very 'I can tell the future listen to me' manner about her).

Soon more Veilspun had caught up with the two, whisking along with the two. It was quickly turning dark, and they were becoming less and less tired and more and more amused at the audacity of these two to enter their forest, after all the tales and stories told, after all the warnings and pleas not to enter.

"Can you hear that?" she remembered that Cari asked Flurry nervously.

"Hear what?" Flurry had snapped back, not even looking at her.

"It kind of sounds like... laughter," she replied. "Maybe we should have listened to that elder."

Flurry had snorted. "If the Veilspun ever existed, they don't now. It's just an excuse some Clan made up to keep dragons out of this forest for some reason."

Cari had cast around a nervous glance and landed on the Guardian's horns. "I still don't like it. It feels wrong."

Through the magic, every Veilspun following them laughed cheerily, sweeping their long manes and graceful tails around in the darkness. The magic guard had not been down yet, they knew, for they hadn't let it. They would before the two could leave the forest.

Flurry skidded to a stop suddenly, looking up at the sky. They had surrounded them, hiding in the shadows, so that the two could not go forward, backward, or to either side. The glamour dropped and the two dragons did not move.

"The Veilspun!" Cari gasped, sitting up. She took a moment to compose herself. "Greetings."

"You have gone through our forest," the eldest Veilspun stepped forward. "After the tales that have been spread. All the warnings that went unheeded."

"The first children of the Shadowbinder?" Flurry asked skeptically, though he, too, was unworried.

"Yes," Tup replied, stepping forward.

"We apologize for entering your forest," Cari dipped her head.

"You're smaller than I would have thought," Flurry paced forward and tried to poke Tup with one long, sharp claw. She hissed at him and fluttered higher in the air. "You're smaller than Cari, and she's a Fae."

"Leave our forest," Mother growled, slithering forward. "Leave."

Though they had left, Cari was most curious about them and came back to visit a few times. Tup had learned to tolerate her along with the rest of the Veilspuns, though she was not exactly welcome, she was not chased away.

And then, months later, without any explanation, Mother had scooped her up and whispered to her, "You must go to the Shadowbinder now. You must go to our Mother, our goddess, the one who made us."

And so Tup had gone. How long had she served the Shadowbinder? She lost track of time, until the Shadowbinder had called her, and Tup went to see her. Instantly, she realized that this was a powerful being. She emitted a regal and intimidating energy that Tup had never felt before. Shadowbinder offered her a chance to go back into the world... off to a Clan living near her beloved home of the Wispwillow Grove.

There had to be a catch...

"And you shall remain a hatchling forevermore."

There it was. Still, Tup agreed eagerly. Surely, Shadowbinder had a reason to send her back, and who was she to resist her deity's will? So she had been sent to a Clan called the Shadowbound as a hatchling.

And there... it could not be. It was Cari. Tup sensed that Cari recognized her, but the elegantly beautiful Fae never said a word. And Tup never revealed just how powerful her magic was- she had been on the verge of it, but then she saw how no other dragon had her powers, and decided to keep them secret.

She stayed in the Shadowbound, hoping and waiting that one day, Mother and Father would find her.
