Arenji was struggling. The Shade had claimed many of their followers, and while Arenji and the Shade had never had a reason to loathe one another before, Arenji needs their followers. They depend on the followers remembrance and those who recognize Arenji's presence, no matter what they call the gifts. But the Shade drives dragons mad. Dragons throw their thanks to the side for a maddened existence. This would not do, not if Arenji wished to develop their form once again and take their place among the gods.

So a plan was hatched. A meeting between the ethereal Arenji and the billowing Shade took place. A bond was formed between the two, a deal sealed by a new creation - dragons who could take on the Shade and carry it, spreading it to other clans but would remain unaffected by the corruption. Beasts who could carry out Arenji's will, beasts who would be far more than pack animals carrying the disease that the Shade spreads. Arenji would create them, would bless them, would armor them, and the Shade would cut off their connection to other gods so these dragons could not be influenced by godly magic, shown by the scales that were turned as dark as night.

The first few attempts were unsuccessful. The creatures that were created had the ravenous hunger of the Shade and the luck manipulation of Arenji. They could not be controlled by any of the clans that they were placed in, wreaking havoc and spilling blood across the desolate plains of the Plaguebringer's territory. That was, until one pair was created. A pair whose existence was stable, a pair that could carry the Shade's corruption and the will of Arenji on their backs...and so could their children.

Their hunger is unparalleled. The carnivorous beasts tear through enemies in the coliseums like raptors, consuming all in their path. Dragons who stand between them and what they want find that they are fierce aerial combatants with sharp horns and even sharper fangs. From the bones of their enemies they form an exoskeleton, a ceremonial war garb to protect them when dragons try to stop their spreading of the Shade. Seeing one in the wastes is said to be an omen of bad luck, and the only way to deter them is to leave skeletons of other beasts outside of tents and camps. For now, this can keep them at bay and send them back to the shadows from whence they came, but eventually their numbers will grow...and when that happens, they will no longer have to hide.
