Older than memory, Anansi has taken many forms over the ages, though in all of them their trickster nature shines through. Their favored form of late is that of a female pearlcatcher, allowing them to store a millennia or more of collected stories in the magical depths of their token pearl. As a collector of stories, she takes great joy in...embellishing the stories of the lives that she enters, collecting places, characters, and any future plot device she can get her clever claws around. It was in this pursuit that she came to meet the Horsemen themselves, supposedly even going so far as to snatch Famine’s talonclasp pendant, a bauble for another day, another story. This particular Horseman understandably resents the cunning trickster, though he also holds her in high regard as a master of her craft. She builds stories with morals that have ultimately shaped the lands of Sornieth itself, and while her passion is her own entertainment, her longevity and ability cannot be overlooked. In collecting colorful characters for her never-ending odysseys, Anansi made the acquaintance of a young and headstrong witch named Nightning. Delighted by the volatile girl’s desire for power (so many ways her story could end!) Anansi chose to get to know her better. In doing so, she learned of Nightning’s plight, another story woven into one she had crossed paths with before. The Horseman’s pendant was once again on the line, this time stolen by a star-crossed pair of lovers— wait, no, accuracy in a story is important! First, stolen by a desperate Laylee to restore her love, Drex, then traded to Nightning...then stolen again by a desperate Mistral to save his love Bess. Such desperation! So many slippery talons! Anansi adores these sorts of twists and turns! Despite her enjoyment of Nightning’s tale, Anansi was disinclined to help her restore something Anansi had lost interest in previously. After all, she had her pendant, did she not? In order to sweeten the deal, however, Nightning was prepared. She offered Anansi an ancient Plague Tome, lost to time, full of stories not yet collected into Anansi’s beloved pearl. Unable to resist the intrigue, Anansi promised to restore the pendant to Nightning. Little did she know, this would put her directly in the path of a plot twist not even she was prepared to see unfold. Tracking Mistral and Bess was not difficult for Anansi. She almost wished it was. Desperate lovers make for such happy endings if they can succeed in their goals, however, her own goals made that impossible for them. Eager to be done with her task and reap her reward, Anansi prepared to ambush the hapless pair and make off with her trinket. She was not the only dragon with that intention. Rather than springing a surprise attack on the couple, she found herself face to face with Famine’s emissary, the dragon Ash. Angry and confused to find her goal similar to his, Ash lashed out and the pair fought. Doing so alerted Mistral and Bess to their location, and just like that they were gone without a trace. Well. Mostly. Anansi was, after all, very good at sniffing out a story in the making Refusing to be left out of their only lead, Ash followed Anansi doggedly into the depths of Sornieth. At first eager to be rid of him, then just out of her own amusement, Anansi began to play tricks on Ash, some clever, some cruel, some just funny for the sake of passing the time. The longer their paths intertwined, the more that became the status quo. Before either dragon was aware enough to attempt to deter it, a romance has blossomed. |

Anansi provided Ash with a sense of peace he had never known. In his life, surprise and uncertainty had only ever spelled disaster, yet here was this curious, eccentric dragon that bent rules and rewrote stories at her whim, and the changes she brought to Ash’s life only seemed to improve it. His understanding of the balance he was supposed to strive for began to shift. He began to realize that there can be need for the uncertain and unknown...and for love. By the time they found Mistral and Bess, neither felt they could take the pendant from them. Anansi became too invested in the story they were living to trade it away, and Ash had learned the extent a dragon will go to for love. He couldn’t find it in himself any longer to blame Bess or Mistral for the events in his life. On the night of the four dragons’ peace treaty, Famine himself visited Anansi, shrouding himself and his old rival in darkness. He commended her ability to play so many games at once, her skillful claws pulling as many strings as she can fit on them — but he brought her a warning as well. A misplaced piece in this current game could very well cost Ash’s heart...or his life. As Ash is his emissary, Famine is obviously not eager to lose him. Not to be outdone, Anansi pointed out that it’s Famine who’s embroiled her beloved in this twisted match that so often is just pitting the living against the dead. She refused to back down, and he left with a solemn warning, again, that she should play their game with the utmost caution from here on out. With two emissaries now on the same side, it remains to be seen whether Riot and Firebird can be swayed into joining forces with Ash and Mistral. All the while, a mysterious force spreads in the catacombs below the Triumvirate’s lands, and the tattered and hastily patched Veil threatens to tear anew. Will Ash’s newfound capacity for love be enough to save his own, or will Anansi see the end of too many stories she’s invested in, perhaps even her own? Lore written by vervain. |
