Niles was often seen running. Not for his life, but for whatever part of the law he had crossed this time. You see, Niles wasn’t too interested in following rules and conventions, and when he wanted something, he’d get it, which was hard when that something already belonged to another dragon. Not that that ever stopped Niles. He was known for having sticky fingers and stolen goods somehow often turned up at his den. Naturally, this could only go well for so long and in the end, Niles got caught and they locked him up. It was only a matter of time before it happened anyway, Niles couldn’t be too angry at it.

But he ended up being a very lucky dragon. Instead of being sold, or kept to starve as punishment, Niles was one day called in for a… meeting? The Fae had no idea what this meeting could consist of, and for sure wasn’t expecting a Guardian at the other end of the room looking at him expectantly. “You’re lucky, punk.”, the prison guard grunted. “This good fellow over here has some use for you.” The door was slammed shut behind him, locking him and the Guardian in the room, and Niles half expected to end up as someone’s dinner tonight. Instead, the Guardian snickered and said: “Hey kiddo, my name’s Fortune. Nice to meet you!” The Guardian, who was apparently named Fortune, gestured to the seating area. Niles obediently sat down, trying to keep his eyes and paws off the jewelry that his new companion was wearing. “They’re going to throw you onto the auction block, did you know that?”, Fortune continued, still smirking. “But I think that would be a waste. I think we could put your talents to good use at my home.” Niles’ crests moved curiously and that was all that Fortune needed to continue. “You see, I’m my clan’s treasurer and I need an assistant. Someone who knows value when they see it. Someone who knows how to handle expensive stuff. Someone like you.” Niles’ crests turned again, but this time in confusion. “You do realize that I’m a thief, right?”, he asked. Fortune laughed loudly. “Yeah, exactly! If there’s anyone fit for the job it’s gonna be you!”, they laughed some more and continued: “Okay so here’s the deal kid. I hire you as my assistant, you get out of this hole and you’ll be surrounded by riches for the rest of your life.” Niles nodded expectantly. “But, if you want something, you can’t take it from our stash. You have to find it yourself. There’ll be enough dragons around willing to help you as long as you do not steal from us.” Niles cocked his head in question. “I can see that you’re confused kiddo, but think of it this way: you’re in our treasury, all the stuff in there is shared anyway. Also, I would know if something would go missing and I’d send you straight to the darkest parts of the jungle. You’d never get back.” Fortune’s idea sounded more like a threat than a proposition. But somehow, it also sounded like a challenge. A risk that Niles was willing to take.
