Osiris is the Egyptian god of the afterlife and the king of the underworld. He was sent to rule the earth by his parents but his brother Seth was jealous that Osiris got on the throne. One day Seth prepared a coffin and asked every god on the party to lie down in the coffin. But nobody except Osiris fit into the coffin. When Osiris laid down in the coffin, Seth nailed the coffin and threw it into the nile. Seth fled from the party and looked for the coffin downstream, where he found it and dismembered Osiris, spreading his body parts all over Egypt.
Isis, Osiris' wife and sister, reassembled the pieces together with Osiris' son Anubis. Anubis mummified the body and Isis gave him life with her magic. Unfortunately Osiris was neither dead nor alive, so he had to stay in the underworld, wrapped in linen, but strong enough to rule the otherworld.
