Lore~

Not many dragons can honestly say they know exactly what their purpose in life is. Even fewer dragons will tell you that they’re content with that purpose. But from the very moment he was old enough to understand that the world stretched on beyond what he could have ever imagined, Cinder knew he was born to chase the horizon. To map the stars and follow the setting suns. The call of adventure burned fervently in the young skydancer’s heart.

Tragedy struck his home not long into his adolescent years. A fierce wildfire consumed much of his family’s abode and destroyed the territory of his birth clan. Worst of it all, however, was that the wall of flames left Cinder separated from his parents, to be rescued by a crew specially trained to deal with the aftermath. Wildfires are not uncommon in the Ashfall Waste, but this blaze was particularly aggressive. Later, older dragons would speculate that someone in Cinder’s clan had angered Flamecaller herself.

Cinder was taken to a sanctuary for young dragons who’d lost their families or homes to disaster. Despite the lovely-sounding concept, however, the place was cruel. Run by dragons who didn’t care, dragons who neglected Cinder and the other abandoned hatchlings who took refuge there. Unable to stand it any longer, the young skydancer set out to seek his destiny the moment his wings were strong enough to get him off the ground. It was not long before he found exactly what he was looking for.

Or rather, it found him.

Cinder had only been alone for about a week, but it was becoming more and more evident he had no idea how to survive on his own. The first day, he’d entered with bright-eyed optimism and a thirst for adventure. A call to see the entire world and make it his own. But by the seventh night, he was hungry, exhausted, and frightened. Other dragons were now a threat, animals were food, and he was so tired from moving all day. And he hadn’t even crossed the Ashfall Waste yet.

Though he was tough and proud of his resilience, Cinder was close to giving up. He was weaker than he’d ever been, his ribs beginning to show. It was by some twist of fate that a band of mischievous pirates was traveling along the coast when they found the starving young dragon. Knowing he would have nothing they could steal, the group argued amongst themselves until the old wildclaw captain declared they would take Cinder into their band. And just like that, Cinder had a family again.

The captain, a scarred wildclaw by the name of Pyro- coincidentally also born in the Ashfall Waste- adopted Cinder as his son. The pirates raised him as a thief and con artist, so when Cinder regained his strength, he took to their lifestyle. And boy, did he enjoy running wild alongside rowdy and fun-loving adventurers. Cinder stayed aboard their ship for months at a time, growing accustomed even to the water, and he saw the world. Every region, just as he’d always dreamed.

Perfect cannot last however.

Over time, Cinder noticed this hole in his heart that had once been filled by traveling and exploring. It was eating at him again, and he was frustrated when he couldn’t understand why. More frustrated when Pyro suggested the reasoning may be that Cinder longed for a stable home again. Pyro didn’t treat it as something shameful, but Cinder thought the very notion was disgraceful to the life he’d been given, so he dismissed it. He had everything, and he found it foolish and pathetic to want for something more.

Only a short time after Cinder had begun feeling this way, Pyro’s age finally caught up to him, and the old dragon got very sick. So sick that he sequestered himself in his quarters and would only allow Cinder to enter. The young skydancer did as he was told. As Pyro lay dying, he reached out to put a hand on his son’s chest, right over Cinder’s heart.

“It’s still there, isn’t it? That emptiness,” He whispered. "I want you to find someone who... can change that."

Cinder couldn’t find it in himself to answer, instead trying to hold back tears. He gently pressed his head into Pyro’s shoulder and stayed there with him. “You can rest. I’ll take care of the crew. I promise,” he whispered, and he felt Pyro’s last ragged breath leave him. Cinder, for the first time since his parents had disappeared, let himself mourn the loss of someone he loved. He buried his head under Pyro’s wing and sobbed.

When Cinder emerged from the captain’s quarters, he donned the kerchief Pyro had given him just before he died. The captain’s kerchief. The crew now belonged to him, and for the next few years, he led them as Pyro would have. But his father had been right. That emptiness was still there, and it consumed him. Seeking some sort of fulfillment, Cinder only focused on getting stronger and wealthier. But deep down, satisfaction always seemed to evade him.

He received a messenger hawk one day, a detailed letter about a job opportunity. Apparently some shadow diplomat was on a mission to the Sea of a Thousand Currents and had heard tell of Cinder and his crew. The letter was offering a hefty sum of treasure in exchange for personal security. Not one to turn down a well-paying job, Cinder packed his things and bid his crew farewell. He would return when he was done with this stupid imperial.

He met Ransom with every intent to be annoyed with him. Every intent to hate him, even. But... Fate’s a funny thing sometimes. Sometimes she does the exact opposite of what you want.

“Hey, there, are you Cinder?” Ransom cocked his head as he wandered over to the ruins upon which they'd agreed to meet.

“Yeah,” Cinder looked the imperial over. He appeared to be half-ice and half-lightning at the same time. And naturally, the curious mind, Cinder asked about it.

From there, Ransom explained his dual allegiance, how other dragons looked down on him for it. And Cinder opened up a bit about being a pirate captain. It was a short journey to Ransom’s mission, but it was enough time for Cinder to stop pretending to be irritated. Enough time for him to sort of like Ransom. Sort of care.

But Ransom was more than ready to carry out his diplomatic mission so Cinder could escort the imperial home. Cinder wasn’t quite sure why Ransom was so eager to get back to the Tangled Wood, but he didn’t protest. He’d go back to his crew, and they’d be like ships passing in the night. They’d never see one another again.

Why did that thought hurt him so much?

Cinder sulked that night, while Ransom did whatever he had to do with the water clan. But come morning, Ransom hadn’t returned. Only come midday did Cinder finally decide something had gone really and truly wrong. He went down to the clan’s den and asked the dragons there what’d happened. No one knew. Through careful research (read: ‘interrogating innocent guards by threatening torture’) Cinder learned that Ransom had been dragged off by a bunch of lightning dragons that’d been passing through. Lightning dragons that the water clan was in alliance with, so of course they wouldn’t put up a fight.

And in the span of a few short weeks, Cinder had crossed the ocean to the Shifting Expanse. He sought out the dragons who’d taken Ransom and found out that they’d imprisoned him for his dual elemental allegiance, calling him a traitor. Cinder didn’t stand for that and called on his crew. One epic jailbreak later, Cinder found a tired, wounded Ransom chained to a wall in a dank, musty little prison cell. He flew into an embrace after briefly making sure the imperial was okay.

“I’m glad I found you,” he muttered. “You had me worried, you oversized jerk.”

Ransom hugged back, wrapping his massive wings around Cinder, concealing them both from the crew. “Thanks. For coming after me.”

It was that escapade that sealed the deal. Cinder was in love. Being near Ransom, he no longer felt that emptiness. His heart was full but it was light, and that happiness was exactly what he'd been chasing for years. So he left the pirates’ life behind to move to the Twisted Reach with Ransom, where the two were happily mated. The crew was sad to see him go, and they made sure to give him a proper send off, bowing their heads to respect their captain. But they wanted his happiness as much as he did.

In the Twisted Reach, Cinder found new purpose. He became a fine warrior, dedicated to protecting Ransom on his missions, mapping every area he explores, and has settled into clan life for the first time. He and Ransom have talked about it time and again, and Cinder has agreed. He’s ready to try and have a family again.
