B I O G R A P H Y

Those born and raised on the Shifting Expanse are known outside the Lightning Flight as engineers, lovers of cold steel and hot processors, scientists of the practical and logical kind, but Reatha could not be further from this stereotype. Though appearances don’t usually matter to Lightning dragons, it became increasingly clear as she grew that her glowing lightning-colored ringlets - superimposed on feathers as dark as the desert’s night sky - were a sign of a different kind of Lightning mastery.

Though she tried, no amount of patience led her to a love of science. Hidden from her parents by the cover of night, she practiced her magic; She carefully honed her power over years of these nights, often seeking help from members of her clan that were more magically inclined. They obliged, not wanting to deny a passionate and talented dragonet the chance to pursue what made her happy, and she grew into a powerful mage over years of practice.

Unfortunately, as most things do, this came with a cost. As Reatha grew more powerful, she became more independent, simply by nature of the fact that her clanmates didn’t know how to argue with her. How could they, really - A dragon wielding the power of the storm around them? They were scientists. They didn’t have time to fight her. So she became used to obedience, to her stoic silence getting her way. But she also became used to her clanmates’ resentment of her; Scoffs from dragons in lab coats and eye rolls from everyone who wore goggles. The silent treatment from those who lived nearly their whole lives in the Spire. It wasn’t that she hated science, or that she hated her clanmates… They just seemed to have no respect for a Lightning mage.

After a while, she realized she had well and truly messed it all up. Her powers, her confidence, her individuality… what were they good for if her clanmates hated her? So, after returning to the lair one night after her shift at her energy management job in the Tempest Spire, she gathered her things and called her clanmates to a meeting. She apologized wholeheartedly, pouring her heart into her words, but few responded positively. She announced she was leaving for the good of the clan… and all they said was “good luck.”

Reatha flew for days, stopping to snack on the occasional grub or plant, wondering where she belonged. She couldn’t leave the Expanse, this she knew; No place could match its power, nowhere else could she harness the lightning that ran in her blood. The Highland Scrub, though sometimes looked down upon by upper-class dragons of the Flight, was her answer. It held many small clans, some unfriendly, but most welcoming. As she took to the sands on foot, she asked those she ran across whether any clans were taking in new members; They all pointed her to the same one. Her favorite name for them was “Nimbus’ Misfits.”

Now, she lives calmly and happily among those who call Clan Pogmatwany home, bringing a spark - literal and figurative - to their lives whenever needed.

🗲 This dragon's name means current in Irish.

🗲 Works with other magic users (Ison, Obara, and Lawenda especially) to cast protective spells around the lair.

🗲 Still works in “energy management,” which is a term that the Stormcatcher uses to describe Lightning dragons that can cast electric spells. Their job? Keep the Spire powered. Because even the lightning from the endless storm needs a little guidance.

🗲 Often seen offering other Lightning dragons in the lair a “jolt” to strengthen them. Nimbus takes her up on it the most, usually before her shifts with the Nightrunners.

🗲 Can sustain her Halo for long periods of time, but will stop it during work and sleep so she doesn’t annoy others around her. Seeing her fly through near-black clouds with her ringlets glowing and Halo active is a sight to behold.
