Arriner, the smallest of all his siblings, had to take some time growing up and learning about the world. He dreamt, like a lot of hatchlings do, to be like his father someday - naive and cruel dream. His father, brilliant and respected scientist from Arcane domain, now residing and working for Light clan that was famous for their thirst for knowledge, was an ideal hard to reach. Especially for Arriner - not the firstborn, not the heir, and also quite weak, he had no chance of standing out. His numerous brothers and sisters, all brought up in Light, were studying science at some point, but Arriner was taking it more than seriously. Doing his best, he strived to learn things yet compelling to him, failing again and again. He had no talent, he heard adults whispering that, but giving up was a luxury he couldn't afford. However, as time passed and nothing changed, Arriner felt the disappointment coiling inside him gradually, frustration taking over, murmuring how he was not worthy of the fame and knowledge he so desperately wished for. Being fixated on his goal, he never considered the possibility of looking around him and studying something different, something suitable for him, and chose to label himself worthless instead. Things were turned upside down when he overheard his parents, mostly, his father, hissing angrily, mad about Arriner not making any progress. Arriner was a disgrace to his meant-to-be-ideal family, with each member outstanding and proud, and if he was not willing to change, he might as well get out. Terrified and broken, Arriner ran away that very night. Too insecure and craven to stand his ground, but unable to follow this path anymore, he headed to the Starfall Isles. Meeting new dragons felt strange - they didn't know his lineage and therefore didn't expect him to be anything outstanding, didn't judge him for being shy and silent, either. They were not focused on science and laws, too - there were different fields to research and strange chores to help with, and Arriner was fascinated by all the new things he saw around him. The most bizarre to him, however, was Mamma and her ways of doing 'art'. Using teensy needles and bright paint made from pigments, she was creating intricate pictures on... other dragons, practically injecting colours under their skin. It looked painful and stayed for quite long, until the dragon would shade, but both Mamma and her clients looked content during the process and delighted by the results. Arriner could not avert his eyes from such tiny needles changing the dragon completely, so similar to what my father said, flashed in his mind, yet completely different. He tried to create several blueprints with concepts from his mind, which were highly praised by Mamma, leading to becoming her assistant, with Arriner still not fully believing if he is suited for it. He took some time before giving in and letting his teacher 'paint' on him, too, and, arching and looking at own body which now shone with unfamiliar colours in astonishment, he deemed that following his own path from now on would be much more thrilling. |
