B I O G R A P H Y
Morgana was not kind or good. She helped people for reasons inscrutable to him, and never without a nasty trick. Love potions were one of her most popular creations. Who didn’t want their object of adoration to love them for the rest of their life? With a single drop of heartblood, Morgana could make their dreams come true. Of course, she never told them that the magic used their heart as a power source, draining the vitality until it beat no more. She only ever said, “Magic always has a price.” Shetudri was mostly indifferent to Morgana’s victims. They were hardly ever good people, and he thought solving problems with magic was asking for trouble. That was before he met Donna. Donna was a lovely, mated dragon with a maternal heart. Donna and her mate had been preparing for children for a long time, and they finally had a nest of three little eggs. However, their hatching time came and went with nary a peep from any of them. Distraught, they summoned a skilled healer at once, but the news was hopeless. The hatchlings were stillborn, and any further nests would be just the same. Donna stood strong against despair. After she buried her unborn children, she determinedly sought out Morgana. A fertility potion was nothing difficult for Morgana, but it required a bit more effort from Donna and her mate. Scales from both parents, and blood, too, would be donated over a period of several weeks. So, Shetudri saw Donna often. She was gentle and kind, everything he thought a mother should be. Morgana hadn’t a maternal bone in her body, and Shetudri quickly grew attached to Donna. He tried, a couple times, to advise her against the potion. “Magic always has a price,” he told her. There were other ways. If you want a child, why not me? Those words caught in his throat. He was terrified of rejection. Donna disregarded his warnings, stubbornly insisting upon natural motherhood. And so, when the potion was complete, he could only watch as she cradled it carefully at her bosom and flew away. Donna and her husband quickly used the potion. Donna bore a single egg, practically bursting with vitality. They were overjoyed. Donna returned to Morgana’s tower with flowers and pastries, giving them to Shetudri at the door. She shed tears of joy as she thanked him and Morgana both, and she told him when the child was due to hatch and urged him to visit. Shetudri forced himself to smile. Donna returned to her family, and the hatching day quickly arrived. Donna and her husband sat curled around the egg as it wiggled to and fro. Slowly, it cracked open. However, Morgana’s words rang true. At the exact moment that the hatchling took its first breath, Donna took her last. Magic always has a price, and here it was a life for a life. Shetudri, who’d spent hours in the market searching for the perfect baby gift, arrived to see Donna’s mate wailing over her lifeless body, and the clueless hatchling clinging to its mother. He froze, and the delicate glass ornament in his claws dropped to the ground, shattering with his heart. |

Afterward, he began his research. He pored through everything in Morgana’s tower and even sought out other famous mages for their knowledge. He spent months tweaking and perfecting his own recipe. He knew it was possible to create a perfect fertility potion. Morgana only failed because she wasn’t good enough, because she didn’t care about hurting people. Shetudri was better. So, he worked, hardly sleeping or eating, for months. By the time he was confident his recipe was flawless, he had nearly stopped growing. But, now, he was ready. Shetudri waited until late at night, when the moon was full and bright. He snuck into Morgana’s potion room, fully stocked with every herb and tool he’d need, and he began to brew. He was infinitely cautious, measuring things to their tiniest increment. Nothing could go wrong. Everything was neatly prepared and added with the utmost diligence, and the liquid in the cauldron began to gurgle and shift. His eyes lit up upon the sight, confident success was at hand. He reached for the final ingredient, seeds of Yggdrasil, and dropped them in. Immediately, the potion soured. The motions of the liquid grew violent and unrestrained, and Shetudri panicked, reaching for the ladle to try to calm it, but as soon as he grabbed it the splashing reached a peak and it directly exploded. He turned from it, raising his claws to shield his face, but the boiling liquid scalded the left half of his body. He screamed with agony, rolling on the floor to try to relieve the pain. Every scale touched by the potion dulled, turning a deathly black, and the pain gradually dulled until he could feel nothing at all in the affected areas. It was almost worse. His screaming woke Morgana, and she charged into the potion room. She looked at the potion and at his disfigured body, and she smiled mockingly. ”Didn’t I tell you, boy? Magic always has a price.” After that, she expelled him from her tower and apprenticeship, leaving the wounded and broken-willed mage to wander the lands alone. He felt lost and untethered, and he thought there was naught in this world at all to live for. It was then that he coincidentally happened upon some familiar faces. Donna’s mate and her child. He saw them from afar, and he didn’t dare disturb them, but he could never be mistaken. The little hatchling had grown up some, and it could chatter now. His heart felt curiously pained, but he couldn’t help watching. He learned that the two had settled down in a new clan. He wrestled with himself before taking over a cave nearby. He wasn’t sure why. But, this way, protecting them, he felt like he had a purpose again. |
