Biography
༻ A T A R E U M ༺ [ah-tare-uhm]
In the beginning, there was light. But before that, if one could even comprehend the everything and nothing that is before a beginning, there was darkness. Rich, pure, eternal, numbingly vast. And it thrived. This Entity beyond time, beyond mind, corporeal and incorporeal, neither malevolent nor benevolent, a hundred thousand grasping wisps curling into the emptiness, that could hold worlds without number within its tendrils and stars without meaning. It simply was, in the way water is wet or the sky is blue: a fact. And when the first arc of light and color burst from the center of the newest universe, it simply was. And when the stars lit the blackness, pinpricks against the pitch backdrop, and the far flung heaps of dust and glistening things cooled and settled around these stars, it simply was. And it simply has been. And it simply is.

Every so often, one of this Entity’s countless tendrils may brush the mind of an individual, quite unintentionally— one does not often notice the movements of an ant, nor does the ant comprehend such movements— and madness is born. They are one with the mind of…something, something so ancient and unknown that it sears the nerves and brain to even begin to craft an image. They will not remember what lead them to become the vessel of such a being, only the horror upon waking, the manic and primal fear of knowledge, the emptiness, the sheer helplessness that comes with understanding one’s infinitesimal and meaningless place before the endless void. Those that survive their accidental entanglement are not long for their worlds— as the mind begins to erode, so will the body, sickness and lesions and rot setting in, until they ultimately succumb. A fitful and dismal death to witness, for those unable to heal such an affliction, but an even worse closure to they that have already born witness to the truth of the end; they know what they must become.
Once an eon, give or take, there will arise an individual capable of not only withstanding the burden of the Entity’s presence in their mind, but to coexist with it, aware that they now serve as a seer for something infinitely greater than themself. With their newfound understanding of the cosmos and awakened eyes, their influence draws a devout sect of those who believe them to be divine: the voice of a god, in flesh. Though this voice speaks of creations and planes no mortal may understand- for to such mortals it is akin to attempting to understand the description of a new, unknown color- their followers listen ever attentively and ponder over their every word. Atareum is merely one such voice, the latest in a long line of Awakened spanning times and planets; a quiet but commanding demeanor that softly draws the attention of any room. Such beauty and knowledge, misunderstood by many and invaluable to precious few. Of the many gifts such knowledge has revealed, creation is considered the most sacred and revered by their followers. With such a blessing, Atareum has crafted many safe havens over the centuries, where their followers eventually settled and erected cities and temples. One, however, prevailed far longer than any other, a beacon of peace and enlightenment. It was here that Atareum resided for generations, a constant, steadfast presence and beacon of the land. When it came time to depart, the will of the Entity not bound by mortal life, they left this city with a gift. As a symbol many assumed to be some form of gratitude, they transformed all those who perished in service to such temples into impeccable stone monoliths, life preserved within, slumbering until the need for them arose once again. Though this city has since fallen to time and dust, there seems to be a flickering remnant of power buried deep within, calling out into the void…
